I just discovered that I am 10 week pregnant and I am very very new in Switzerland. In fact after doing back and forth finally shifted this month here and now I discovered that I am pregnant. We don't know any soul here and don't know anything We are totally bumped and don't have any gynecologist or have any idea of hospital here.
I have basic Assura health insurance. We also live in a small village near Eglisau and can not find any recommendation for a hospital nearby where people would speak in English.
Would be so grateful if any one of you had any experiences giving birth from this area and could recommend any good hospital, prenatal classes, yoga , etc in english would be great.
I was already interviewing for jobs and now so dumb stuck and lost!!
His English is excellent and he is a great guy (although he was pretty slow to learn how to snowboard). He will know who is local and speaks English and be able to point you in the right direction.
As far as I remember, the language used in giving birth is pretty much universal, and most hospital staff will have enough English to understand what you are yelling, and they will generally be saying the same thing back.
I went to a private gynecologist and I do not regret it. She was very competent. I only went to the hospital when bigger, more expensive machines were needed for a more accurate measurement by my 38th week (to see if I needed emergency induction or not).
BTW, the hospital is 8 minutes away from my door step. I would still go to the private practice if I had to go through it again - less hospital feeling, more personal contact, not so many people waiting, better magazines...
I had my first baby last year here in Switzerland and also only had basic insurance. For me that was all I needed. I saw a private gyno except for one time when she was on holiday then I went to the hospital. We live in Swiss Romandie and I went to the local hospital to be induced and have the baby. Some of the nurses did not speak english, but if there ever was a problem of understanding ( I speak a little french) they would get someone to help out.
We are lucky that we have the hospital very close (walking distance) as I had nightmares of not getting to the hospital in time...
and congratulations for your baby...now I know its such a milestone So happy everything went well for you.
I do speak German but not swizz German so just freaked out. Plus the nearest public hospital is like 14 km away and I so share this nightmare of not making it there in time
Is this your first child? If so, you'll probably be close to 10-12 hours of labour (and if you are lucky like me, 3 whole days of fake labour... because, FML). Not getting there in time is almost impossible with only 14km to cross...
The water breaking and baby following shortly later is Hollywood nonsense.
Yes it is our first child It is a big surprise and have taken us completely off guard So comforting to hear about that water breaking scene... :P I have already panicked my husband for that
We are considering Spital Bulach since its the only 14 kms to our house though we actually wanted Treimli but its like some 36 kms from our house. So still double minded what to do.
Don't be frightened by this: Consider the possibility that you have a difficult pregnancy and end up having to go to the hospital a few weeks early. If you are in Bulach your neighbours and husband will be able to spend more time with you, but if you are in Triemli it will likely be only be your husband who makes the trip. If family come to visit for the birth they will likely be staying at your apt, right?
If you want an English birth course you will probably have to travel to Zurich, but your Dr and Hospital are more practical if they are close to home. The birth will be sometime Juneish... Imagine this: you've been "out to here" for weeks, your back hurts, you're fed up with insatiable desires for weird food, it is a hot day and your water breaks. The waddle to and from the car is the same at either end, and even if the car does have A/C the additional 30 min to get to Triemli will seem like an eternity, both to you, and to your husband.
As far as I can tell Bulach isn't known for selling first time mothers off to the slave trade - it would probably have made the papers, at least the local ones.
Smile, you're pregnant. It's the coolest thing ever.
My husband has seen many doctors here and has never met one that did not speak English, the only issue is that sometimes the medical assistants and secretaries don't, which can make calling them on the phone tricky. It is easier if it is a bigger office with more staff, chances are they will find someone who does.
I'd also choose the closer hospital, you never know how much time you will have, and a 30 minute drive, which can easily become 50 in rush hour, is no fun when you are in labour. I would just go to the hospital and ask them, they will be able to refer you to an Ob-Gyn that practices there.
My recommend is University Hospital in Zürich the Maternity ward is second to non and the staff are amazing. Obvs. some people on EF prefer private, and thats probably better for having your own room after birth if the privacy is a huge issue. USZ is very good my wife is Swiss but we went through everything in English, including the prenatal workshop weekend in English which was also brilliant.
@Medea Fleecestealer...Thanks for your link. I have a basic Assura Health insurance.
@TobiasM... Since we live far away from Zurich City and Spital Bulach is near to our house, We have decided to go with it. We have made an appointment for the next week there. Fingers crossed for this one
I have a colleague who lives in Egislau. She's German, but she does speak English, so if you're still interested in getting more information about yoga classes etc around there, I can ask her if you like.
