fish 'n chips ? ( Nyon )

while strolling around yesterday afternoon mrs. and I found a little shop / cafe that advertised fish n chips.

It's directly across the street from the "Fisherman's Pub" in Nyon, and while it didn't look likely to be included in the next Michelin Guide it looked clean enuf but as we weren't hungry we didn't try it.

has anyone? ... just curious if it's "real fish n chips" .. frozen... or perhaps filet de perche under an assumed name.

thanks for any replies.

cheers,

g

I would guess it's not Fish & Chips as we know it. I've seen this round Zürich too and have always been dissapointed.

If you try anything from that shop, let us know. The previous owner had the best kebap in all of Switzerland and was well-known for it; his business had been written-up in the press on several occasions. The current owner, in a stroke of Swiss business genius, took out the kebap. One would think that if you're buying a business, you would make damn sure that you know what's been bringing in the customers.

A local would never sell any filet de perche under any other name if it's from the lake, and not from Tanzania or wherever in Russia.

Can't really help you otherwise though, sorry!

Really? Was it that great? Never heard of...

I had a kebab in Lausanne this weekend and it was as bad as usual here.

In Berlin, they are 5 times cheaper and so much better, can't even compare.

I've had them and they were good . Disclaimer: I've never had fish and chips in the UK. But I was raised on fried seafood in the U.S. coastal South and while not stellar in comparison it was tasty and satisfied my hunger.

The new owners are Czech/French hybrid brothers. Nice guys, seem to be making an effort to do something nice in the neighborhood and while it's a shame the kebaps are gone, I'm glad the shop is still there and they kept most of the original rustic ambiance. I do berate them when there are no Czech beers in the fridge though.

The old guy who made the kebaps was a gem- the last time I ate there I got 2 kebaps and some other household emergency items (Sunday) and realized as I finished eating later that he had not charged for the food... when I went back the following week to pay him the new guys were already setting up shop. Knowing the old man I'm quite sure he did it on purpose and I'm just sorry I never got to thank him .

A few doors down is a nice creperie, big scary looking dude commanding a team of teenage girls who do a fine job of service. Prices are reasonable and he serves a good cider on tap in addition to bottled. One of the first times I went there as I finished eating he plopped a black coffee in front of me that must have had a solid two fingers of whiskey in it- didn't order it, must have looked rough that day!

thanks mud, I also noticed the creperie and while I didn't notice the big bloke I did notice the wait staff *hehehhh*

oh my... am I becoming a dirty old man already !!?!!?!?!?

p.s... where ya from Mud, I mean in the old U.S. of A. ?

Fish `n chips in Nyon yes please!

oh getting tired of chasing those little fish around my plate already,

any idea about a good eaterie in Vevey??? cause until now it was pretty disappointing...

I would recommend the National (Rue du Torrent 9, right by the Place du Marché) and I heard the Café de la Valsainte (Rue du Collège 22) was great but have not tried it myself yet.

We went to Nyon on Saturday (Espace Musique for a guitar footstool - nice shot) and I realized that I wish I lived there. What an awesome little town. I'm looking forward to going back on another Saturday and not missing the market this time.

The boat to Yvoire is a short and inexpensive ride if you haven't been there yet. Seeing both towns makes for a nice afternoon.

Sounds lovely - thank you for the suggestion!

mrs. G is going on a girls w.e. this coming w.e. and in return one of my mates ( husband of one of the aforementioned g.f.s ) is coming over ( lock up yer daughters !! ) and we thought we'd do this if the weather is nice... a very convenient way to terrorize two towns / countries in the same day.

Don't shoot me down or anything for my ignorance about Fish n Chips...but...

What about "Nordsee" ?

I have seen Fish n Chips at the one at Zurich Airport and also at the one at Zurich HB.

I got all excited by Nordesee when they came to Zürich. It's not the same though. Still it gives me something to look forward to when I go back to England

I tried Nordesee when I was in Zurich, it was just passable, mind you the flavour just was not the same when soaked in vinegar and salt, from the locally chippy back home.

Well...for a Fish n Chip virgin like me, it was the closest I could get here.

Looking forward to the real deal when im in the UK.

I think Nordsee fish is what we would know as 'Rock' or 'Huss' in the UK. Not exactly proper Fish & Chips to my mind but some people obviously like it.

For me the only proper Fish & Chips is Cod & Chips

If this proves to be proper fish and chips in my town of Nyon, this could prove to be my favourite thread of all time!

I was back in the UK at the weekend and made sure that I had a nice juicy Cod & Chips on Saturday evening.

I live close to Nyon. Is this place close to the debarcadere where you pick up the boats please?
