Hi,
I've been thinking about some bits 'n' pieces that I need to get and I thought about going to some of the flea markets around. But then I realised that I don't actually know what a fleamarket is as I've never been to one.
Can anyone tell me what the difference between it and a second hand shop is? or is it the same thing by another name?
thanks!

A flea market is just a massive 'Garage Sale'.
People pay for a 'site' then sell a whole lot of old crap to people who think they need it.
....... I love flea markets. It's amazing what people try to sell. You'd be suprised at what is on offer.
Go in a group of people and take a 5CHF challengs !!! (see who gets the coolest thing for 5CHF).

Oh,
and Flea markets are where 2nd Hand shops go to buy things..... mark it up by 300%.... then try to sell it to you.

Really great to browse around on a Saturday afternoon!

Also on Saturdays is the markets at "Helvitaplatz" (Yep - can't spell it).
From the Buerkiplatz markets take the trams 2 or 9 to Staufachher.
Then either take tram 8 (direction Hardplatz) one stop to 'Helvitiaplatz'.
Not only will you see the obvious markets, but the correct spelling of Helvitiaplatz will also be revealed.

I only just thought to check where you are living.... Basel .
Sorry, but all the info before was for flea market locations in Zurich.
We'll need a few "Basellers" to fill you in on where the markets there are.
(I'd like to know as well).
The big one is on
Petersplatz near the main University buildings every Saturday.

But be prepared to pay shop prices!
Seriously, I've never understood the pricing here for second-hand goods - nearly as much as new in some instances...

Yes, I agree that this can be true, but the OP seems to know exactly what they want.
If you know what you want, you can haggle and bargin like you are in Sth East Asia, and get the price to where it should be.
If not.... you know they are the fool, as is the one who pays for it.
It's not a crime for the vendor to inflate a price knowing that people will do this to you.... and it's a big victory for you if someone pays it.
Don't be afraid..... play the game.

If you live in Basel then there are a lot of flea markets across the border on the French side, every village has them. Check here:

(if you click on the little green dots it shows you what places have fleamarkets on that particular Sunday)
cool, thanks for all the info! So I guess a fleamarket is just a less formal second-hand shop. If you see someone wandering around Basel this Saturday laden down with random items - it might be me!
Good to know I can haggle too, I wouldn't have tried without being told because I had assumed that it just wasn't done here.
