Flight tickets - name spelling with umlaut

How do you people with umlauts in their names book their flight tickets?

My husband has an ä in his name. I always dropped the umlaut and just put a, as was afraid of none German speaking check-in staff not understanding that ä = ae.

Then when we applied for our "ESTA" for Australia, it said we should put ae like is written in the electronic section at the bottom of the photo page. Resulting in ticket having "a" and visa having "ae". Luckily no-one questioned it.

Now I don't know what to do for least problems

Always the official spelling as it is on the strip of your passport - so in your case ae.

Passport spelling should be used in all cases.

Yes but on the main section on the page it’s ****ä****. However in the electronic bit at the bottom it’s ****ae****. So I think we’ll go with that from now on.

Yes, use the scan band version, which will be the same as the one on the NFC chip.

When booking flights you should use that version as well.

Yes mine also -always use the full spelling as otherwise when they read the passport with the machine it does not work

The upper section of passport where there is name etc is is spelled with the ü ö ä which you cannot use to book flights as no special characters allowed.

The strip always has ue, oe, ae and this is the version to be used.
