Floorboards

I want to replace the floors in a couple of bedrooms, i’ll be doing them myself as I’m quite happy fiddling around with bits of wood. My question is; where do you source boards (looking for larch or oak, solid or poss engineered) ?

  • Straight from the wood yard? There’s a couple of wood yards in the town but they appear to focus on carpentry more than supplying materials.
  • Any online sources?

Any relevant experiences you’d like to share?
thank you

Migros. And yes I’m serious. https://www.doitgarden.ch/fr/c/1646368629/batiment-bricolage/construire-et-renover/bois/decoupe-de-bois

You may buy ready to install, painted wooden panels at Hornbach. They are made to tight tolerances and fit snuggly together.

Now Migros didn’t come up on any web searches! i’ll take a look

Of all the DIY stores, Hornbach tends to have the fairest prices.

That’s laminate flooring, a different thing altogether from real wood floorboards. It’s what I would use, indeed, I have done many times, but is this what @ArthurRaffles is asking about?

The naming convention here is confusing, them tending to use Parkett/quette for what is still actually laminate flooring with a real wood veneer surface, whereas in English it really means solid wood block flooring.

I’ve used stuff from Ikea (many years ago back in the UK), hornbach and Bauhaus. The latter has been my preferred supplier in recent years.

I’ve used both - my preference is the local lumber yard.

They tend to be very helpful, and in my case, when they noticed I was carrying them to the first floor alone, stayed and helped me lug them up the stairs…

Yes @Ace i’m looking for solid wood not laminate. Preferably with a t&g edge

Do you have underfloor heating? Solid oak over a certain thickness will prevent the heat coming through.

No underfloor upstairs (where the new boards will be laid), have underfloor downstairs but have tiles there.
