How to reach Southampton best from Zurich or Basel? Any direct flight?
Flight to Southampton - or Flight to Heathrow / Gatwick and then rent a car?

Train from Gatwick to Southampton takes 2 hours. So it really depends on flight availability and price.
The BA Zurich > Southampton > Edinburgh flights, which I used a number of times, ended 20 years ago.
Post Covoid, airlines have cut many flights, including to Birmingham.
I would fly Swiss to Heathrow and hire a car. If money is a factor easyjet to Luton is possible, but getting to Southampton is more complicated if a car is not rented...
KLM offers connecting flights via Amsterdam. But book at least a 1 1/2 hour connection as a minimum, otherwise your baggage will arrive on a later flight, if ever.
I've done it both ways, when visiting my mother:
KLM to AMS, AMS to SOU Swiss to LHR, car to Southampton. 2 flights and all the attendant messing about? No...
Assuming you don't travel in rush hour, you will get there much faster by plane/car. By the time you spent 2 hours in AMS walking from one gate to the other, you'll be pulling up outside your destination.
Many flight choices per day to LHR from ZRH. Only limited flight connections to Southampton via AMS or otherwise.
(I think I also went via Paris one time? That was before FlyBe went under though.)
