Flying to Australia

Hi all,

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best options for flying from Switzerland to Australia (more specifically Geneva/Lausanne to Melbourne/Sydney)? I have just moved here from London so I would normally fly from there, but I am sure there are some airlines and/or routes that I am missing using the usual suspects (opodo, zuji, kayak etc).

I am trying to get back to visit the family at Christmas so any tips that would not break the bank would be most appreciated.

Cheers

Kristian

I have a great travel agent that has access to flight waiting list. If I don't get the dates I want which is usually the case when I fly home to Melbourne, she puts me on these waiting lists and the ticket gets issued (and I pay) about a month before leaving. I've never met her, we do things over email/phone and she's always mailed me the tickets.

If you're interested, PM me for her details. I find this so much more easier than walking into kuoni months before christmas, where they sell you whatever's available then and there.

BTW - The best route from Zurich is with the asian carriers (Malaysia, Singapore, Thai, Emirates airlines) as I really do try to minimise the stops. Perhaps Qantas from Frankfurt/London would be an option for you and they're usually cheaper. But I don't know if they fly from Geneva.

Another problem with most online ticketing places is that no one site lists all possibilities, neither do travel agents.

Some airports allow you to buy tickets directly from them, sometimes at lower prices than elsewhere if you're lucky.

Do you mean "some airlines"?

No, airports. I recently bought tickets for a flight to Sydney directly from Frankfurt Airport . Not all airports do this, but you never know.

Cheers for the imput guys. I will get cracking on some more research. Def keen to get the most direct route possible.

Very handy that airports sell tickets, cant understand why more dont get onto it as i generally are more concern about where i fly from rather than whom i fly with!

Thanks again

Flew from Zurich via Hong Kong to Sydney a few weeks ago.

We went in and out of Zurich on Swiss, and Cathay & Qantas forward and back to Hong Kong.

Was relatively painless, and much better than with an additional ~3 hour trip to fly out of Frankfurt. Didn't have much of a stopover in HK though.

If time is not of the essence, do yourself a favour and get a 1-night stopover. Most airlines will include it without significant extra cost.

I always flew Malaysian from Zurich as their planes were never full when I went anyway and I often had 3-4 seats to myself so I could lie down.

However, I heard they would scrap the route, so you'd need to check if they still fly it..

No good unfortunately. We looked into Malaysian as they are one of the cheapest airlines for trips back to Oz but the closest they get to our part of Switzerland these days is Paris.

We have decided to go with Emirates as they fly out of Zurich and their flights are a bit quicker and more direct.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
