Foreign Tax ID for american online brokers

Hi,

I'm in the process of opening an account with TD Ameritrade and they ask for the Foreign Tax ID. Does anybody know what this corresponds to? the AHV number maybe?

Thanks

You don't have one, it's not needed. I assume your filling an W8BEN form.

Sure, it says on the paperwork that one should be submitted.

Ok, so no need? event better. Thanks for that.

The brokerage house may be requesting an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN). Wiki says:

"ITINs are used by aliens (non-US citizens) who may or may not have the right to work in the US, such as aliens on temporary visas and non-resident aliens with US income. Often people need the identification number because they have been advised by a bank that no account will be opened without a number ...."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxpay...ication_Number

Also, wouldn't it be best to ask TD Ameritrade for clarification?

Having filled in the same form W8BEN for Post Finance, Charles Schwab, TD Ameritrade, HSBC & Hargreaves Lansdown, I can assure you it's not needed.

It also says:

"

However, an ITIN is not required to claim treaty benefits relating to:

-Dividends and interest from stocks and debt obligations that are actively traded

"

Which I guess it will be the case here.

I am filling a W - 8BEN form. Any idea about tax treaty benefit?

According to this post: Some Tax Questions

Swiss residents do not need to pay withholdng tax. What is the article number to fill in part II 10?

You will pay 15% withholding tax in most cases, if the securities are held outside CH. In CH there will be 30% withholding tax

Thanks. Do I need fill item 2 in the W-8BEN form? See attachment.

Correct assuming you are.

I have never needed the ITIN before but this time the broker required it. According to another thread it should be the AHV:

https://www.englishforum.ch/finance-...ber-three.html

Wrong. For U.S. tax purposes ITIN and foreign TIN are two different things.

For example W-8BEN ask for either for a ITIN (Part 1, Item 5) or foreign TIN (Parrt 1, Item 6) (See also W-8BEN instructions)

To get a ITIN you must file a W-7 https://www.irs.gov/individuals/how-...ly-for-an-itin You will need notarized and apostiled copy of your passport for this, or as they say "certified copies from the issuing agency". Easy to get if you are Swiss, hopefully your embassy or consulate provides such service if you are not Swiss.

Providing the Swiss TIN may simplify the process of claiming tax exemptions based on the US-Swiss double taxation treaty. Those affected will see.

As said the Swiss TIN is equal to the AHV-13 number.

Right! I miswrote, I wanted to refer to foreign TIN

I need to fill a new W-8BEN to update my address.

This time the form mentions that since 01.01.2018 foreign residents in all countries, except 4, need to provide a TIN. I put my AHV Nr. according to previous posts and assume it is correct.

That is correct
