[French] Condolences

How does one express one's condolences in French? I am clueless and would like to send one to my teacher, just a simple note.. Thanks!

je suis desolée?

How are your French lessons going?

Haha, if I was any good I wouldn't have to ask here, would I

So, when somebody dies, what does one write on the card?

I found this, it sounds ok to me but I am not sure

It's perfect for somebody you don't know very well.

I think the message above is more personal than 'Toutes mes condoleances,' but you have to decide whether you are saying 'tu' or 'vous' to the person.

Does that make sense?

It does, thanks. I know I have to have all the tutoying or vousvoying done correctly, I just missed it when I was pasting.

Thanks for help!

I picked the less personal one, so let's see if she rips my head off next lesson

If you fear such repercussions, you can use the following phrase:

That's a lesson on its own. Thanks!

(where did my babelfish go.. )

I'm pretty sure that she'll be touched that you made the effort to write her a card - and that's what going to matter to her most.

tutoying and vousvoying = what great Franglais! Now, say the same in French

Uhm....

Erm....

Tutoyer et..vous-vou..

Vouvoyer? Oui! Bingo!

It is nicely discussed here , actually. I wish EF had a subforum speaking in French, something would probably rub off on me.
