[French] Ne pas affranchir

I have in hand a envelope from my bank to use to return a form it wants me to sign. The envelope says "Ne pas affranchir" in the upper right corner. I keep expecting this to mean "No stamp necessary" because that would be typical in the U.S. where I am from, but I think it says "Not stamped" - more to be expected in Switzerland where nothing is free. But if it means "Not Stamped", I guess I wonder why they don't just leave the corner blank?

In any case, I'd rather not spend a franc on a stamp if I don't need to.

Thanks!

Hmmm .. Google Translate says it means " Not Free"...

but see this:

= no stamp necessary.

Google is wrong - again!

google translate says "not free"

edit: boy am i late (and wrong)

I would translate this word to word as "Do not frank".

Thanks, Odile and Jrspet! I'd tried Google translate but just wasn't convinced. You can see why I was confused.

It is indeed common to receive those pre-stamped envelopes when an answer is expected from you (bank, admin, etc.).

I wasn't able to download the example so here is the link.

This term is used to say " no postage necessary " or " postage paid ". It is used for commercial response mail where the company is paying the return postage (as an incentive for you to send something back).

It's not "free", it's just not you who pays directly but the bank who pays for the mailing. (you pay bank charges .... )

I am French. It means "do not affix (a stamp)" but the connotation is that it's because it is not necessary as it is free.

Here is what google.ch says

which means that google.ch is right. And I do NOT see the problem

I'm French too and it means "to not put a stamp"!

Well no, google throws up some sites that are right, but google itself, as in the translate tool previously quoted, is not right.

The lesson I am taking from this is to Google the phrase as well as putting it in Google translate.

Thanks, everyone!
