French window hanging on one hinge

Hi, We had visitors and they accidentally handled the windows in the wrong way. Now I've got a window which is supported only by the bottom hinge. You cannot put it up and open it from the top, neither can you close it properly.

Should I attempt to repair it myself, or should I call the agency...I suppose they would charge me for this kind of work. Any idea how much they would charge?

Isn't this a common thing with many Swiss windows? If you turn the opening lever so that it opens from the top instead of the side, or vice versa, without closijng it properly then it will be hanging off one hinge.

Just open the opening-handle, push the window flat hard against all the hinges and turn the lever through both positions until it clicks back into them all.

Post a picture.

We had the same problem as a friend got it wrong - it took a bit of fiddling to get it back as it is a large window. Ask a friend to come and help you as it is too heavy to do on your own.

With many Swiss door on windows, you open the lever to the right at right angles to open fully, or tilt it upwards to open the top only, with the bottom fixed. If you get the handle in between the 2 positions, the whole thing will become unhinged.

Did someone get the handle on EF stuck between the two positions? Plenty of unhinged things around here....

On my french window, near the handle, On the surface of the frame which touches the non-moving part when closed, there is a small tab like movable element. When the window is open, is moves out of the frame a bit (it is spring loaded), and thus blocks some movements of the handle, to not allow "unhinging" of the window.

However, when the problem happens, this tab has to be pressed so that the handle can be moved to the "forbidden" positions to put the window back on its upper hinge.

Thanks for the replies, I managed to fix it with some help. One person held the window and pushed it hard when the other one turned the handle up and it latched into place. thanks.

Excellent - glad you had some help as it is very fiddly. We now always show all visitors how those windows work, to avoid that situation
