Friend drove car and crashed.

Curious what the situation is here. Friend drives their own car and used my car for a day. crashed it into a wall and sustained damage to the car.

Would their insurance cover it or is it on my insurance to cover?

Of course their insurance covers it, assuming they have it. Get them to report it immediately to their insurance and also get their insurance details and report it to your insurance with full details.

EDIT - Seems this may not be true and apologies if so but I assumed if someone has liability insurance then this is what it used for.

How is that? The car is insured not the driver, so surely the owner's car insurance pays out?

Wouldn't it be part of the third party liability?

The car is insured (or not) - we have a very cheap car. It is not insured comprehensively - it is insured for damage to other cars or to the general public or infrastructure - but if your car is not insured for damage then your friend may have a large bill (and/or be no longer your friend).

And even if it is insured, if your friend is too young, does not have a licence, or breaks the law in any way, they are also liable... and your insurance may not cover as they should not have been driving it (eg. drink-driving)...

Simple: Your friend has to cover the repair/replacement of your car. Their bad if they do not have insurance.

If they have the correct kind of insurance, they might cover it. If you have casco insurance they might also cover part of it and you can claim the cost of the bonus hike from your friend.

Note: Damage done to third party property is covered by your cars liability insurance. Potential bonus hikes has to be covered by your friend.

The car insured by me with full casco so hopefully this means I can cover it. Quite frustrating as I guess it will reflect badly on me.

insuficiient data from OP

otherwise, and please correct me if I am wrong:

Car is always insured as an object, the driver doesn’t matter (except some special cases)

  1. if the insurance is including “Vollkasko” than the damage is covered (minus deductible, exempted some cases

  2. if not, the damage should fall on the driver (the one who causes the damage)
this can be paid through his personal liability insurance, normally this is an addition, so it has to be asked for/agreed at the time of making the insurance
at least for me it was: House insurance + personal liability insurance (with additional cover when driving occasionally others people cars, does not cover rent a car)

something about this is here, but it is in German

So the friend is very upset and I feel bad for them. It seems like they have 3rd party coverage that will pay for my deductible which is a couple grand.

Its gonna suck to be without a car as I guess it's gonna take a long time to repair.

Out of curiosity, is this the same car that you didn't get the warranty on?

I have a special insurance for driving other people's cars ("Führen fremder Fahrzeuge") for this particular case. Caveat: It will not cover damage to family members' cars or the cars of people living with you. Not entirely sure why that is but that's what they told me.

Hope you can find a solution that leaves nobody at a disadvantage.

Slightly OT, but my under 25 sprog reversed our car into a friends car - while my wife was sitting in said friend's car as a passenger.

Cost us 1000 francs excess, no loss of NCB, and no loss of a friendship (priceless).

2k excess, warranty dispute, months without car. You will spend so much time on the phone at work you might lose your job, or miss out on a promotion. Dump the car cheap to someone while there is still warranty, maybe to some dodgy dealer whose mate will repair it in 2 weeks in Poland and then flip it lying about warranty period like they did to you. Spend 2K on a 20 year old VW with 40k km. Cheap halbkasco insurance. By an old R8 if you like performance. A 3 year old car only brings stress. How much is depreciation while it is repaired, plus your garage place rental, car insurance premium? Like a bad girlfriend, it is jinxed, you don't belong together.

It would be if it was covered. Alas it isn't.

Careful, bonus protection is usually limited to once per year. You may shoot yourself in the foot if there's another accident this year. And if it remains the only one you still become a less profitable source of revenue for the insurance.

The only one your friend has reason to be upset about is him/herself. A real friend would feel bad for you, for damaging your car. And they would make sure you have a replacement while yours gets repaired.

It's you who has every right to be upset about the other, about the other's carelessness, about turning your car into an "Unfallwagen" and deteriorating its resale value.
