I've been in Switzerland (Zurich more specifically) for around 1.5 years now. I have relocated here with my work with a B Permit. I work full time (100%) and i'm planning to start my own side jobs in my free time (more specifically photography services). I have the following questions:
1. I am not planning to register a company but declare that i am partially self employed. From what i understand this is feasible. What is the process to make the self employment declaration (remember that i am also employed)? Is it necessary to declare this if my extra income does not pass a threshold?
2. The fact that I work full time will cause any issues with being also partially self employed, will this create any conflicts?
3. If my total income (employment and self employment) does not exceed 120,000 CHF i dont need to declare anything, correct? (maybe i need to declare the additional income on my tax form every year i.e. employment 70,000 + self employment 40,000 = 110,000).
4. If the services i provide do not exceed 100,000 CHF a year, there is no need to register with the VAT.
Is there an official place i can check these things?
If i am confusing anything, i apologize, i am just trying to start having a clear image on how to tackle this matter.
First of all you should read the small print in your present employment contract, as sometimes working part time is forbidden without approval (So that you do not arrive tired at work), there is usually also a clause forbidding working for other companies in the same field after you leave present employment, which cannot be enforced easily.
Your expenses and profits are declared on your annual income tax form, which you will have to ask for in January 2015.
Might you need extra liability insurance? You might want to talk to a tax accountant, or ask at your tax office.
I have found out that you definitely need to inform SVA office and pay AHV on the side income If its over 2300 chuffs a year. Please correct if I'm wrong.
If you get unemployed would you be able to claim unemployment benefits? ( if your secondary income from your side income is less than say 25000 chuffs a year)
You're talking about side income, so in all likelihood you're over 2'300 already, and are to pay AHV/IV/EO for the full side income.
I think you can only claim unemployment benefits as a former employee, not as self-employed. If your 2nd income is from self-employment you may not receive benefits on that. Ask AHV themselves.
1. I am not planning to register a company but declare that i am partially self employed. From what i understand this is feasible. What is the process to make the self employment declaration (remember that i am also employed)?
You must register with the SVA.
2. The fact that I work full time will cause any issues with being also partially self employed, will this create any conflicts?
You must check your full time employment contract.
If my total income (employment and self employment) does not exceed 120,000 CHF i dont need to declare anything, correct? (maybe i need to declare the additional income on my tax form every year i.e. employment 70,000 + self employment 40,000 = 110,000).
In your example, your income is already declared at 70K for quellensteuer. You will need to declare the other 40K on a tax return.
4. If the services i provide do not exceed 100,000 CHF a year, there is no need to register with the VAT. The threshold is around that. Note it is turnover, not profit.
Just to be clear I'm asking about getting unemployment benefits from my current full time job which I have held for the past 5 years. Not about getting unemployment from my part time job.
I dont think you will be able to get unemployment benefit if you are self-employed. However, if you lose your main job, and you qualify for unemployment insurance then if you can get a side job and still get unemployment insurance, its Zwischenverdienst.
