Garbage disposal built into the kitchen sink - are they available in Switzerland??

Hello all

we are looking at getting a new kitchen and would love to have an American garbage disposal built in the sink.

Has anyone come across them in Switzerland? Or has anyone brought their own from the the US and installed it themselves?

Thanks

S

You mean the one that mushes all the solid waste up and puts it down the drain ?

seriously...where do you think this waste goes ? Switzerland isn't near an ocean where they can just pump it out to sea...

Swiss waste disposal, I believe is mostly incinerated at high temperature...

Your two other options are landfill, backyard burning or water pollution...

Think compost..

I have never seen one here, I expect they are not approved. If you do buy one over there, bring the sink with you as the fitting hole is enormous!

^ I'm with this guy

They are not permitted in Switzerland for the reasons mentioned above - and composting is free and makes soil...

I believe they are becoming illegal across the world. as they are so bad on the drainage system....grease and chunks....

Why don't you just throw it down the lavatory like they do in Thurgau?

Thanks. I am obviously not looking to get rid of big pieces of food, just what remains in the sink after the washing - anyway, I get the gist that it is not available here. Thanks.

Funny thing is one of the biggest manufacturers is based in Aargau .

I had trouble with my sink clogging from this issue... I was so accustomed to my in-sink disposal as well as a strainer type drain cover before.

Hubby puts his dishes directly into the sink (without scraping first), as well as used tea bags... even though the trash is right there UNDER the sink... grrr AND as was the suggestion Sutter was given with regard to disposing of leftover food waste, that's what I was told upon arrival as well.

Just in case you are (or anyone else is) looking, I have found some strainers for the drain at one of my local Mùˆller stores. The ones I found are like these and work pretty well. I'm a bit squidgy about touching icky slimy stuff such as the greasy food particles which remain after washing dishes but, well, it's a lot better than calling the plumber out again. (They said it was the worst food clog they've seen in 10yrs )

I thinking of bringing a food waste disposer ( Tweeny ) from the UK, and fitting it under the kitchen sink.

I especially like them for getting rid of soft food material that doesn't really belong in the green bin, or otherwise stinks.

But I have bever seen them for sale or installed here. Does anyone know of any law etc saying they cannot be used here, or if it is because of restrictions on the nature of what may be flushed down the drain? e.g. shredded meat, fish, pasta etc

Some UK councils even subsidise their purchase as an effective waste disposal method.

There was another thread on here about them which, I seem to recall, stated that they were illegal.

As a general rule, anything that is not expressly permitted will not be allowed. I suggest you call the Gemeinde and ask what they think. I reckon the answer will be "no way" but you might be lucky.

Husbands not scraping dishes and putting teabags in sinks? I'm not getting married, ever.

That's only true in the German speaking cantons.

Here, if it's not expressly forbidden, it's allowed.

Cooked food should not be composted, but put in the normal rubbish/garbage for collection...

Half of the states in the US are land-locked and not near an ocean and they all have garbage disposals and don't have polluted water.....

This is not true -- at least in Geneva. All organic waste can and should be composted.

Only if mixed with a good proportion of "live" food, or it won't compost, it'll rot.

ahem.... ..............
