Dear all,
I have found myself unexpectedly unemployed in Geneva, and I'm finding it all a little overwhelming. I've decided to stay as, to be blunt, whilst I'm unemployed the social security is better here. However, that's where the advantages end. I don't have 12 months employment here (annoyingly, I have 11 months), so have to show I have made contributions in the UK to get paid. Because the place I worked previously didn't pay income tax, though I did pay national insurance, I'm having a nightmare getting the paper work together for the Swiss to pay me. I could see it taking up to a month. However, I wondered if it turns out to be take long, will chomage office back date payment?
Also, on another note, as time goes on, I really have no routine anymore. I'm thinking I might start going into the library to look for work, but even then, I'm struggling to only be responsible to myself. I wondered how others coped with this, and whether if anyone else is in a similar position, if they would want to meet up to look for work?
what I have read by this forum.
Usually if you had the 12 months, it would be the RAV that pays and that is insurance. They do not make it easy & do asks for lots of forms or the like to be completed and different documents before any payment to you is agreed.
One of the conditions is you have to show /prove you are actively looking for work from the day you know you will be out of work. I believe there are minimum limits to the amount of jobs you have to apply for each month.
In the search box top right of this forum, put in RAV and read up on a few threads.
I have seen something on some thread or elsewhere, where one can be below the 12months but that work in UK or the like can count.
Yes it might seem difficult to prove, but think what can you do to speed it up, contact to your local Tax Office in UK ask them where you can show the National Insurance contributions you paid, if you were under the tax threshold for the year & did not pay Tax but paid National Insurance, then they should be able to point you in the write direction. Tell them why you are asking. Be polite etc.
OUT OF WORK - routine - yes you must get into a routine. Important to get & excercise, walking is good.
Look and think how to get another job.

The more you contribute to this forum, you might find people warm to you and might start to assist you, but do not expect it.
Errr, thanks for the reply, but yeah, well it wasn't a great help re my actual question. I'm asking whether the chomage office back date payments i.e. if I can't get my proof of tax contributions for a month, will they pay me for April. I guess I should just payment office themselves, but thought I'd come here given the language issues I've had. As to 'lurking an anonymously', I have no idea where you got that idea from. I've barely used this forum, so I wouldn't describe it as lurking. And anonymously? Well, yes, I choose to keep my online profile anonymous, but if you notice from my post I also suggested that I could meet up with someone in a similar position to apply for jobs together. Maybe the reason you have replied to so many posts, is because you choose to give unnecessary, unhelpful, and rude replies to people looking for help? I think I could get to almost a thousand posts if I adopted a similar approach.
If people don't want to reply because they don't think I have contributed enough, then fine, but please don't post just to be rude. And apologies for my own attitude in this post, but I would rather have had zero replies than a generic and rude response.
Your payments will be back dated to the day you gave them all the required information to make a claim. If you have only been working here 11 months, the ORP are not going to be generous are they? If your French is not good, you probably won't get a job, so why not cut your losses and go back home and claim unemployment there?
OK, no problem. Would you like me to close your thread now to ensure you get no generic and rude responses?
You really need an attitude adjustment. Moggy's response was nothing but helpful. I doubt anyone would be prepared to help you after that last post from you.
Definitely get job hunting and get some applications out there if you can. RAV will want you to provide proof that you’re applying for around 8-10 positions a month to keep any payments coming your way. As Sbrinz says, they’re unlikely to backdate payments so keep an eye on your finances and get any necessary info to them asap so your claim can be processed. Were you let go or did you resign - that will affect when any RAV payments kick in too.
Try and set yourself a new routine. Mornings devoted to job hunting, applications, etc, afternoons visits to museums or other places that might interest you so you’re also getting out into the fresh air every day and keeping your mind active as well.
Payments will be backdated to when you had a valid claim, less waiting days & punishments.
