The wind generally blows from the west, and planes normally take off and land going into the wind. The best views are therefore a little before landing in Geneva, out of the left side of the plane - across Lake Geneva and looking at the French and Vallaisian Alps. Taking off, the views are also better on the left, and you'll see Lac d'Annecy and the surrounding Alps.
However, the wind can change, and the planes may be taking off and landing in the other direction. Then the views are best on the right. If you happen to be unlucky, and don't get the views of the Alps then you should see the Jura on the other side of the plane, which are also pretty nice.
Of course, if there is lots of cloud then you'll see very little.
I would generally agree, but I live by the airport and have not noticed a significant difference between the amount of East/West flights. My suspicion is confirmed by this, albeit oldish (first half of 2005), graphic from Geneva airport's website http://www.gva.ch/en/Portaldata/1/Re...onnement03.pdf

(Green - Landing, Blue - Take off)
So, if you're landing at Geneva it's a lottery, but personally I would plump for the left: should you land to the east, depending where you've come from, you might still have good views of the alps and you get the thrill of skimming the Jura as the plane comes through the col by the Fort de l'Écluse.
If you're taking off and you've not got a seat booked: if they are taking off to the east sit on the right. But if you are flying to somewhere generally to the east of Geneva still sit on the right which ever way they're taking off.
All too often Geneva is stuck in low cloud/fog, and climbing through this, the sudden spectacle of bright sunshine on the mountains tops can be magnificient.
