German: beginner help

We are moving to Stans in August 2014 due to my husband having accepted a job there. He speaks GCSE German at least but I can hardly speak any apart from yes, no, please, thank you and a few other words. We spent the last few days in Stans and I found it very difficult to not be able to chat to the other mum's at the park and in particular the grandmothers who don't speak English and it is a major priority for me to learn enough to get by before we arrive.

I am a stay at home mum with a toddler so doing a week or month immersion course is not an option. My husband's workplace will pay for lessons in the Autumn but can you give me any inexpensive tips to get started between now and arriving? Buy some books? CDs?

Many thanks

Sophie

Welcome to EF. I am on a tablet right now so can't post links easily...do a search here on EF for "learn German" and you will see lots of threads with suggestions, including links to sites like duolingo.com.

Deutsche Direkt is a good place to start:

Goethe Institute distance course is another (more expensive) option:

A final thought ..... Aldershot is only there, because not everyone could live in Farnham

Thanks for that, I've ordered Deutsch Direkt.

Do you mean Aldershot only there with regard to where we live in CH?!

One link to help:

What is the best & fastest way to learn German?

You'll get used to Timow's sense of humour eventually. Or not.

Good luck with your German!

Btw I really like https://www.duolingo.com/ and it's free!

Duolingo ... it's free.

Is there an echo in here?
