German Medium [language] Public school near Rolle/Lausanne

Hi ALL

Due to job change we are planning to shift to Rolle (between Nyon and Lausanne). We are currently in Zurich, My kids are 7 and 11 years currently in German medium school. I want to find a city closest to Rolle but offers German medium. I want to avoid them study in French medium.

We plan to move this September

Please suggest me some good towns/govt schools to check. Thank you.

If any of you have done such a move, I would like to talk to you.

There are no public schools that are taught in German (that I know of) in the area.

I think You'll have to go to Fribourg. Otherwise there is the German School in Geneva. But it's not a public school. It is supported by the German government. Not sure if there is tuition to pay. I would imagine so.

You can check here .

Thank you. Even if I travel 30-40 mins it is Ok .

So Freiburg is the closest option for gov German schools then.

Or Bienne- just depends where you work is going to be based- possibly move the other side of Lausanne where there are quick trains or commute.

My guess it would be an hour or more commute one way if you come Fribourg or Bienne way. Fribourg is sort of split so you need to pick the possible move area carefully. To the right of the river is German speaking, left is French. You’ll hear both languages being spoken in the city though.

So Schoenberg in the city proper, Tafers, Dudingen, St. Ursen, Giffers, etc, are German speaking areas. Marly is French. You’d need to check with the relevant gemeinde admin office that their school does the majority of its teaching in German.

medium school = middle school?

From the context, I presume 'medium' here means the language in which the lessons are taught.

Yes, the teaching language for 7th grade and 3rd grade... We just want to continue the flow of their education.

And also do they also follow the gymnasium system (to go to university).. and what grade do they conduct the exam?

They need to live where the school is if they want to go to public school. So, 'the other side of Lausanne isn't going to do it.

Murten is probably going to be the closest to Rolle at about 1hr/1:15 commute.

Something else you may need to consider are public holidays which are not the same in all cantons. For example I think Murten had 1st May as a holiday, but it’s not the case here in Misery-Courtion although both are in Fribourg canton. And Vaud doesn’t do the 1st May either. Other holidays that are different are Corpus Christi (holiday in Fribourg, not in Vaud), August 15th (holiday in Fribourg, not in Vaud), 1st November (holiday in Fribourg, not in Vaud), 8th December (holiday in Fribourg, not in Vaud).

And for info it takes my OH around 50-55 minutes to get from here to Prilly by car. Murten’s another 10-15 minutes away down the autoroute and then you’d have to add on more time for the Lausanne to Rolle part of the journey.

The stretch of autoroute between Lausanne and Rolle is a real mess ALL of the time (especially around Crissier and Morges-Aubonne). You can easily add 40+ minutes for these few km.

I would also look at how long the train option would take from Fribourg to Rolle (a quick look says about 1hr 22min). So depending on how long to get to and from the two stations to work/home it is probably under 2 hours per day. Go for a AG 1st class and work on the train.

Another question/option. What about an apt. in Rolle and commute on the weekends (with maybe one day of home working) that way the kids and you stay where you are.

Thanks..

So min 1 hr drive one way to Rolle.....

Just checked this one... NO fees info on this.. does anyone know more info?

any reviews?

Keep in mind that the Deutsche Schule Genf will be following the DE school system and not the CH school system.

A little Google (but outdated info from 2006) suggested between CHF 6'000 - CHF 10' 800 per year, per child. I did not see any reviews.

That's what I mean- other side of Lausanne to Rolle- nearer to Fribourg.

That's obvious as it's only the on the 'other side of Lausanne' that you get near the German speaking part of the country....

The German School in Geneva will follow the German curriculum from Germany. However, if that is the only German speaking school available I would not rule it out as an option. The approach is not that different from a Swiss school. I myself attended German schools in India, Russia and England and then switched to a Swiss Gymnasium which was doable, although I did loose a year in between as there was a slight difference in curriculum. It is a private school and thus there will be fees involved.
