Can any recommend any shows that have subtitles or maybe text for hard of hearing? ideally easy to understand with not too much slang....
I 'think' Im ready to try to understand some German TV and thought it would help if I was able to read the subtitles at the same time..... obviously in German too so I can get used to some sentence structure etc....
Do you mean German programs with English subtitles? That is indeed a very good way to learn.

No, I don't personally find them helpful as they aren't often correct and I then get too distracted with the detail... I'm looking for German subtitles or hard or hearing text.... or maybe there is a way to add the text via the TV remote control ?
You can with Netflix.
If you don't have it, I believe you can get a free trial for a month so you can see whether it suits your requirements.
You can for a great many regular channels including all the Swiss ones. Just hit the subtitle button on your TV remote or (possibly) select it over your TV menu.
Even works (sort of) for live broadcasts like the news, if a bit laggy and error prone.

The problem will be that the subtitles rarely if ever match the spoken dialog.

Is there a public library nearby? If so, try if they have DVDs. With most Dvds you can choose German and German subtitles. You only pay a yearly membership fee and can then choose from all the DVDs. They large library in Zurich has a massive offer.
This isn’t really a soap but there’s a series of movies called ‘Nicos Weg’ which is specifically designed for learning German this way. It’s basically a story about a Spanish Immigrant who ends up moving to Germany and ends up in loads of weird situations haha. If you watch it chronologically then each one starts using more advanced vocabulary. So the first one is A1, second movie is A2 etc.

ALSO: I use this awesome chrome extension called LearnLanguagesWothYoutube and it shows both English and German subtitles, or you can shoes jut german, and any time you don’t recognize a word you just hover your mouse over it and it’s shows the dictionary meaning and you can save words to go over later for any YouTube video which has subtitles including he Nicos Weg movies
Also the same people who made that extension have a second one which does the same thing but for netflix. I haven’t tried that yet but it will probably help you if you plan on watching German Netflix shows.
It’s all well and good getting used to the flow and sound of a language by watching the German subtitles but you aren’t go understand much of it on context alone. Some, sure but it’s better if you can conveniently look up the word right there and not have to open a new tab or whatever
Also, bear in mind that almost every show will be in Hoch Deutsch so it’s not gonna Sound the same as how they speak here
Nico's Weg is quite entertaining if you're trying to learn German. I tried watching a few documentaries on German TV, but gave up as some are in English with a German voiceover, but you still hear the English under it which is very irritating. At the cinema I make a point of reading the German subtitles.
As Tom1234 said above, Netflix is a good choice.
I’m watching Friesland (it refers to the German area), a somewhat amusing Krimi, Dr Klein, a soap with funny bits, and I watched an episode of Dr psycho ( I think that’s the name) - fairly absurd Krimi/comedy.
My German level is A2, and I try to listen to people speak German as much as I can.

This is a listing of the Teletext pages to choose Subs for differnet German channels.
However, channels such as Kabel1, Super RTL, sadly don't always add the Subs for CH.
I am a profound Deafie and need them to watch telly, lipreading from TV is too tiresome.
I can't recommend any German soaps, since I exclusively watch British TV
Try Bergdoktor on srf1 (Hochdeutsch). Easy to understand - they don't talk too fast - and the subtitles seem accurate enough. I've only watched about 5 minutes of it when I was looking for something suitable for you.
Arte is also very good. They have great documentaries with high production values and subtitles are generally also very accurate.
I'd avoid anything that's dubbed from English into German. As German takes up about a third more space than English, the subtitles are often contracted and don't match with the spoken word. German dubbing also tends to be very fast - again, because German is much longer than English.
yes, thats what I found with German spoken and English text... its just irritating.... I might TRY and get hubby to watch some with me to tell which ones are better .... but since getting him to speak German at home is impossible I won't hold my breath...
