German terminology for driving test

Hi everyone,

Hopefully soon I will be ready to take my driving test. I need a bit of help with the terminology please. My instructor speaks to me in English and has advised me to study up on my German for the test. I can speak German for work etc , Iā€™m just unsure of what will be said on the actual test.

Could anyone help me please ?

Having done a driving test in German, the tester gave very basic directions.

Take the second left/turn right at the lights/explain thermodynamics for a toddler/park behind the white car on the right.

My test was in Austria, so I'm not sure how it works here exactly.

The other part was the under the bonnet pointing at things asking where does the windscreen washer fluid go, what it the 710 cap for, does the car have adequate blinker fluid.

In my case (15 years ago) it was very basic. I could also speak very little German then, and it was perfectly fine. The inspector limited our interactions inside the car to "turn left in 100m", "turn right at the traffic light", "stop at the next intersection", etc. They never asked me anything about the car itself. Just the driving around the city and back.

If you are converting your license, the examiners speak English well as most people convert within the first year, but still learn some basic phrases such as Abbiegen links, rechts, erste ausfahrt, anhalten, Richtung Autobahn etc etc... my teacher gave me a page and practiced two classes with instructions in German.

If its learner license, that bigger vocabulary should hopefully help.

Am surprised that your instructor has not switched to German after the first couple of lessons. This is the norm.

The other thing you can do is switch your navigator to German so you become familiar with left, right, intersection, etc.
