Getting a service done in Germany, tax saving?

So after the debacle of selling the car I have decided in fact that I will keep it and enjoy it for another couple years.

I have an agreement with the main dealer in Konstanz for the main service, some additional work and a guarantee that will cost probably 4,000 euro in total.

I can separate the work into 3 components:

1) 550 (including MWST)

2) 1,700 (including MWST)

3) 1,800 (including MWST)

I saw by random chance today (I shudder to think how much I have not claimed in past few years!) that I can claim back the vat of 19%? This would represent a significant saving of 770 euro which seems too good to be true?

Any opinions/advice?

I found this link , in German of course.

Thank you for the link. My German is not the best........I think it says its not eligible?

16%

1/1.19 = 0.84

So, EUR 650.

Sorry, it says you need to ask the garage for a " Werklieferung" then you can claim for everything, otherwise you can only claim for parts.

Under German law, you can only reclaim VAT on parts that have actually been fitted to your vehicle. You also need to ask the garage if they will refund the VAT before you approve the work.

Edit: You will need to pay Swiss VAT on the parts, not labour.

And in Italy it is the opposite (been doing it for decades).

But in any case, as you said, only on the parts, NOT on the labor.

Tom

What do you mean that it's the opposite in Italy, Tom? I didn't understand what you meant by this?

Only non-installed parts can be VAT reclaimed.

Tom

When I did service in Italy they simply wrote on the invoice "not subject to VAT according to law xxx, because non-EU plates" and I did not pay VAT on anything, parts or labour.

You pay VAT on everything (parts and labour) except for liquids see https://www.bazg.admin.ch/bazg/en/ho...-vehicles.html
