Getting rid of old furniture and trash?

Hi everyone:

Apologies in advance... I'm sure this question has been asked before, but none of the responses I've seen solves my problem!

I need to get rid of an old desk and chair, plus several large boxes, within the next month or so. I don't have a car to take things to the dump or the second hand store and there will not be a cardboard collection day at my apartment anytime soon.

So can anyone suggest a cheap, fast way to get rid of this stuff? For example, are there any second-hand stores that collect? Are there any companies that anyone can suggest that can collect old cardboard? The ones I have come across so far are horrendously expensive.

Thanks a lot!!

Does the Zurich man with a van deal with runs to the dump?

I think this is what you are looking for

If the desk and chair are in pretty good condition you could try contacting your local HIOB store. They take in all sorts of goods to sell to finance their projects and they will collect. They took some of our stuff away when we moved house recently. The website is www.hiob.ch and you can find the nearest store to you there. It’s in English too.

Thanks a lot, everyone.

Markarena, a company like the one you suggest would be ideal, but I called and it doesn't serve Zurich (where I live). Would you happen to know what category I would want to search in the phone book for a similar company in my area?

Ask them. They may collect it for free.

Call 055 555 55 55

Alternatively, if the thread is still valid 10 months later, anarchists and left-wing rioters are always on the look out for useful street barricade materiel for forthcoming social events such as May 1 demonstrations or objections to referendums that don't quite work out their way.

Being of good social standing, I have no idea which notice board that these unwashed black hoodied individuals use to exchange information, maybe a local unwashed teenager hanging around a street corner in Kreis 4 might be of assistance?

I will be moving out soon. The information provided here is helpful. Thanks

Wondered if anyone knew this exact question for the Canton of Luzern??

I need to dispose of a mattress in the next couple of weeks, I have tried researching online for Real Recycle Luzern, not a helpful website.

Really not willing to pay a stupid amount of money to just dispose of a mattress because I dont own a car (although I am pretty sure I wont have a choice in the matter)... I remember in London you can just leave items outside your house and it would be gone by the morning... not suggesting i would do this but you get the idea!

It will probably depend on exactly which Gemeinde you live in in Luzern. Your best bet is to go down to the Gemeinde offices, or call them and ask.

Alternatively, why not ask on these forums if there is someone local with a car who'd be willing to help?

Thanks for the info and good idea about posting on here!

This is such a useful thread for a newbie in Zurich - this is the best forum ever invented Props to the founder!!

Some things that feel like trash to you might be usable by someone else.

Anything you would like to give away, you can advertise for free on:

- this Forum under "Marketplace"

- www.fleedoo.ch (everything on that site is always for free)

There, it's a good idea to

- put in the title: Gratis, Free, zu Verschenken, to give away, gratuit

- name the product with synonyms (couch, sofa, sofabed, daybed, divan)

- specify the basic colour(s) and the substance (genuine pine wood, aluminium, cotton, imitation leather)

- post all the dimensions (length x breadth x height), both inner and outer / with and without legs, etc. as applicable

- post approximate volume (e.g. one big Ikea-bagful) or weight (will take two strong men to carry / can be dismantled and could easily be transported by bus)

- upload as many photos as you are allowed for free, including honest close-ups of any damages such as scratches, stains or tears

- as far as relevant, add details of "non-smoking home" and "from home with cats".

I think that the more info you give, from the start, the less work you will have answering questions.

Second-hand shops (known by various names such as "charity shops" or "op shops") are called "Brockenhaus" or "Brockenstube" (abbreviated to Brocki) in German, and "brocante" in French.

You can search on www.directories.ch (the phone book) for anything in your area starting with Brock... or broc...

Some Brockis will collect goods for free, if the men in the van, there and then, assess the goods as re-sell-able. If not, they will charge a fee which you pay in cash, and they take the whole lot away, and directly to the municiple dumping ground / refuse incinerary. To get this service, you need to phone the brocki, describe the goods, and agree on the likely price.

Some Brockis will do the round to the dumping ground (for the fee) only if they can combine it with collecting something from you that they can actually sell in their shop. So that's something worth weighing up, whether to keep something back for the Brocki before selling all your other items.

Yes, you can try putting your things out on the pavement/sidewalk, with a large sign "Gratis zum mitnehmen" / "Free, please help yourself". This is not strictly legal, and if you do this, best to choose a day that is not wet and rainy, so that if no-one collects the items, you can take them indoors again (before they go soggy) before the next official refuse-collection day. If they're still out there by the time the dustmen come by on their regular route, you could get a fine.

Many municipalities have a way of disposing or large items.

In Winterthur, for example, you can buy special stickers to affix to the item, so the dustmen know you've paid the proper tax, and they will collect them.

In Zurich, you can dispose of items for FREE if you take them by public Transport to the cargotram https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/vbz/de/...und_etram.html

In Winterthur, the stickers do not work for metal items (so my hauswart tells me). But they take furniture with the sticker affixed. Most towns have recycling centers. For example, Maag recycling in Winterthur is huge and takes pretty much anything, a lot for free. The guys are really helpful too. .

Hi. This post is so very useful. There must be plenty of people wanting to have "junk" collected. My aunt has furniture and mattresses and boxes of trash. I am willing to rent a van and even hire men to help but no one wants a very old mattress and this really trash. I am unsure where I could take it. She is in lausanne and 87 years old. She needs my help to make her home better. If anyone knows where I can dump near lausanne, I would be thankful

It depends very much on which part of Lausanne- Google

décheterie Lausanne

and you will get a map with all of them and you can pick the nearest to your aunt. However, she needs to get the official card for access- to prove she is a Lausanne resident and tax payer beforehand. It is free from the places mentioned in post below, but you can't take stuff there unless you have one.

Renens: +41 21 632 74 02

Pully: +41 21 721 31 39

Prilly: +41 21 622 73 21
