Hi all, I don't know if anyone will have had experience with this, but thought I'd give it a shot. My husband and I just moved back to the U.S. after living in Switzerland for the last 11 years. We are now in the process of obtaining our car insurance in the U.S. and in order to get a "good driver" discount, all the companies want proof of your driving record. While we were in Switzerland, our car was titled in my name and insured under my name as well. My question is, is there any way to get a record that shows my husband didn't have any issues so that we can provide that to the agents. They are looking for a 6 year history at least. If it's possible, where would I get it from, the Strassenverkehr in our Kanoton? I know it might only save a couple 100 dollars, but hey, that's money! (I should mention I don't have this problem because I kept my U.S. license up to date). Thanks!
Normally you can ask for an attestation or certificate from your previous insurer about your clean driving record. However, US insurers posed a problem for me when I went to live there. They would not accept the proof from French and Swiss insurance companies! I had certificates from several companies showing a clean driving record over several years but I was told that they would only accept proof from American insurance companies. So I had to pay the "beginner" driver premium.
Probably a good idea to verify with your insurance company first if they will accept a Swiss certificate before going through the effort in recontacting your insurance company.
Thanks, I thought the same thing which is why I didn't bother trying to get one, but the agent actually asked if I could get a record. I'm just not sure if they want it from the insurance company or the equivalent of the DMV.
Having done it the other way around, I believe you should get in from your previous insurer. For what it's worth, the swiss company gave me a good driver discount after acknowledging a letter from my previous US insurer. Should work the other way around, but agreed the US are more difficult in this respect.
We are in a similar situation- trying to get a driving record for my husband from the cantonal car transport department (DMV-equivalent) to submit to US auto insurers.
We are based in Zürich, so here is the relevant link for this canton: http://www.stva.zh.ch/internet/siche...Mregister.html . If you Google "ADMAS" and your canton's car transport department, you should find the relevant webpage for you.
Per the website, we sent a letter to the authorities asking for his excerpt from the federal ADMAS register, including a copy of his Swiss drivers license. Unfortunately, we experienced a hiccup with this, as he wasn't found in the register, so we are trying to find another approach. However, this could be an exception, so this might be worth a shot for you.
We did not own a car, but were Mobility members. Thinking out loud here, I wonder if Mobility could provide a driving record. To the OP- thanks for inspiring this line of thought!
When we successfully get a copy of his driving record, I'll post an update.
Good luck!
