I have recently been offered a new role in Gland but have been told to look at places to live in Nyon or Geneva has anyone got any thoughts on this. As I literally dont know anyone in the area I was inclined to move to Geneva just because its a bit busier and can hopefully socialise more but am aware this will cost. Whereas it will be cheaper in Nyon or Gland any ideas? Also I have for my sins a parrot what are landlords like regarding pets?
Geneva is a nightmare to find a easy simply flat to lay my head on...
Nyon is said to have much,much more reasonable prices for accommodation, although I haven't looked at Gland before..
If you are looking for a social life but want to avoid the accommodation problems of Geneva, then go the other way from Gland,... Lausanne. Finding a flat is getting pretty difficult there as well, but not as bad as Geneva.
How about places like Aubonne, Morges, Rolle etc?
Good advice. Morges, Rolle, Aubonne, Nyon etc are lovely, but pretty quiet, especially in winter and late trains aren't that late if you're planning to party into the wee hours in Lausanne or Geneva.
Do you play rugby? Nyon has a rugby club (quite good too, well used to be anyway)
Gland is not a bad place to live
I live in Gland with my girlfriend. Compared to surrounding villages, I find it dull and far less scenic. There's a few pubs scattered around, a strip joint and a bowling alley. It completely lacks the Swiss feel that people love about the area and instead seems to only function as a place to live. Although physically next to Lac Leman, there is only one (well-known) public beach area that is quite small and takes a good 20-45 minutes to walk to (depending where you're walking from). Although being a potential 8-minute walk as the crow flies, you need to walk parallel to several private properties, including that of Michael Schumacher.
Nyon, on the other hand, is IMO a perfect balance between active city life and boring residential life. There are plenty of social activities going on, a number of good cafes, bars and restaurants and a hillside castle overlooking the magnificent view over the lake. Seriously, top-notch stuff. And in terms of lake access, there are a couple long(er) stretches of public beach and a long promenade. I really can't think of anything I would want that it doesn't have.
If I were you, I would try to find a place in Nyon since it is relatively easier than Geneva. You are within an hours' walk, or easy biking distance from work in Gland (or one train stop), as well as a short 15-minute train ride from Geneva.
Out of curiosity, are you beginning a job with WWF or IUCN by any chance?
On second thought...move to Gland, I could use a nice neighbour
Thanks for the input guys its much appreciated I guess I will get a feeler for it when i get there. I dont drive though... I can just dont have a car only a motorbike and am in two minds about bringing it over with me etc.
No I am not bizarrely I always wanted to when I was a kid but sadly chose a more corporate path. Wish I was with WWF maybe they could help me with bringing my pet Parrot over with me

Reading this thread, it appears that Nyon has more social activities for a 27 years old, right ?

Nyon. There is really nothing in Gland, and the connection is worse. But if you have a super busy job, you might appreciate the country feel, as opposed to tiny town feel.
I agree. I think you'll find Gland pretty boring after London.
Nyon is a much more lively place.
I can't see the point of living in Lausanne and working in Gland, which would be an unnecessary commute, added to which accommodation in Lausanne is difficult to find, and rather expensive I feel.
Hmmm, not sure at all that the WWF would encourage the ownership of wild birds like parrots (think about it .. although I know most parrots now are bred in UK) How noisy is your parrot? Do you let him fly free in your apartment? For the accom, Geneva is hugely expensive and almost impossible- Lausanne a bit cheaper and easier - why not aim for Nyon?
