I am not sure it’s worth my time, but I did say no carbs for a few months. For a few months, that’s not unhealthy. I am not sure how to explain it, but I try.
You don’t know what people are eating before or after they decide to change their habits. Key phrase, change their habits. Everyone has a plan until they get a punch in the face. My 2 cents: drastic changes are not easy, especially under stress. Better staying generally on course with some fake sugar than giving up after a short time. Everyone needs to find what works for them.
Having no fibre for few months is unhealthy. Full stop.
Not going to argue the point any more though.
There’s enough science/medicine nonsense going on in the world right now without more Karen-from-Facebook “Science”.
I’ve given you some links to some scientific research regarding metabolism. How about you provide some links to something that agrees with what you are saying and not links to a post from Karen from Facebook. (I suppose it could be Robert from Washington too now).
Cutting carbs completely even just for a short time is definitely unhealthy.
Again, I said for a few months. Not forever. Just a reset. People do worse things to their bodies for decades, but you think skipping pasta for 12 weeks is “definitely unhealthy”?
And fibre isn’t some mythical unicorn that only lives in bread and oats. What about of broccoli? Nuts? Avocado? Chia seeds? You can get plenty without needing to shovel down bowls of oatmeal.
The point is simple: some people need drastic changes to break habits. “Moderation” sounds great until you’re stress-eating pizza every other night. Better to go strict for a short time, see progress, then reintroduce stuff later, than fail over and over trying to nibble your way thin.
Not sure what you mean with Robert for Washington, but I don’t think this is the right place for politics.
I was reading an article in the NY Times yesterday of some people unhappy with their rapid weight loss as their skin had lost some of its elasticity and hadn’t shrunk as the pounds came off.
Surgery is one option but can leave scars.
Cosmetic industry is booming because of all this. Botox, etc.
While fibre is technically a carbohydrate, I think most people separate out fibre from starches and sugars. I think nutritional info on food also list fibre separately and not as a carbohydrate.
My doctor told me to stop eating carbs and to replace it with proteins. So since then, I’ve been avoiding, pasta, bread and rice.
I’ve been feeling a bit hungry in the evening so although weight loss was not an aim, it might happen as a consequence. I also read that the human body adapts to changes in calorie consumption so it might flex +/- 700 kcals from undereating to overeating.
I guess we’re seeing the difference between common language and how people with some technical background use words.
I seriously doubt your doc is an idiot, so when your doc said “stop eating carbs” he meant “stop eating food rich in carbohydrates”. Dry pasta is like 70+% carbs, that’s carbohydrate rich. However, dry lentils have 20% carbs, celery like 1%. Aged cheese? Low in carbs but 1-2% anyway.
Substituting cake by lentils or lettuce is not dropping carbs entirely for a few months at all, but that’s just how most of people thinks. That’s why even a doc talks this way. Easier and more productive to bring patient blood sugar down than choosing the hill of proper use of language to die on ![]()
If you stop eating carbs altogether, you’ll probably go into ketosis. There may be short term benefits to this, but long term effects are still unknown.
Age, speed, and amount of weight loss can cause permanent loose skin. Morbidly obese people will almost always develop loose skin if they lose significant amount of weight, especially common amongst those who “stomach staples”. In these cases, surgery is often necessary to remove excess skin for practical and hygene purposes.
Exactly, and that’s how I took it to mean. Not the extreme of “if it contains a trace of carb, then avoid eating it completely.”
Exactly, nobody in their right mind would eliminate all carbs.
The key is to cut out the refined carbohydrates and quick sugar fixes and stick to complex carbs.
Plus people in ketosis smell really bad…like acetone.

Not such a good article as I have to agree to their tracking cookies first.
If you had shoveled down bowlfuls of oats then you wouldn’t have had room for all the pizza and cakes which has put you in the situation you are in.
Oats, as well as being an excellent source of fibre including soluble fibre which can both lower bad cholestrol and help control blood sugar levels - and you don’t get hungry for a long time so there’s no need to snack.
Even Phil’s doctor recommended it for breakfast despite his doctor telling him not to eat carbs.
If you want some advice though, if I were you, I’d stop associating phrases like “shovel down” with food.
The problem you have with this approach, is that you don’t break habits by a one-off change, let alone one of limited duration. You need to change your own behavior that has evolved over years and decades (some you may even have learned in childhood). This takes time and probably more than one attempt.
While I agree that cutting off stuff entirely, or groups of stuffs, can yield far better results than a gradual reduction, I disagree with your notion that a short-term approach is likely to be successful.
Agree with this. Most people who go all out and drastically cut one thing or another out of their diets eventually miss those things or at least get tired of the new approach and go back to their old ways.
I think that’s part of why it’s assumed that those who use these drugs exclusively for weight loss will have to stay on them for life. Once the “noise” that was quieted by the medication comes back, the cravings come back too.
I read somewhere that probably the only two ultra-processed foods which are healthy are multi-grain brown bread and fish fingers!
Woo! My cheeky fish-finger butty is safe!
