gluten free supermarket

hi everyone,+my name is Alessio, new to the forum...

I live and work in Zurich since a few years...

I often buy gluten free food and in coop and migros they have some, although not to much..

I was wondering if anyone knows of a bigger supermarket or similar in Zurich or close by where to get this kind of food..

thanks a lot

Alessio

There is a gluten-free shop on Forchstrasse:

Most health food stores ( Reformhaus ) and some larger drugstores ( Drogerie ) also sell a range of GF stuff. Ignore anything pre-baked and go for either dry baking mixes or frozen ready-to-bake.

Hi there..thanks a lot for the tip..i ll go and take a look..

have a nice evening

Alessio

hi there, sort of on the subject, are there any restaurants that cater to coeliac sufferers, do you know?

yes, plenty...you just have to ask. Our son has coeliac and we generally eat raclette (with potatoes), potato fries (which in Switzerland are mostly gluten-free but we do check, they would be a serious problem in Australia and the UK, but Swiss seems OK), the Indian restaurant 'Tandoori BBQ', the asian takeaway in the centre of the Zurich HB. Our son also eats the 'Doner Box' which is meat and fries plus salad from the Turkish takeaway with no adverse reactions.

Also, Asian restaurants we have had no trouble asking them specifically about gluten free. Hiltl, which is a vegetarian restaurant, has everything marked as gluten free or not.

When out and about our son also has steak and potatoes, and asks for it to be fresh-cooked without any seasoning or sauce. Ketchup and Mayonnaise is usually OK.

thank you swisspea - I know WHAT I can eat, but basically I was wondering if other forum users may have a preference of restaurants where there's a selection beyond potatoes

Hi, there is also a Gluten free shop opposite Wollishofen train station. I think it is called Tabou.

I also went once to Hiltl and i found it really good...i strongly recommend it..

for anyone interested, Ristorante Bianchi (Bindella, on Limmatquai) does gluten-free versions of all their pasta dishes, and have gluten-free bread.

There is a shop called Mr. and Mrs. Gluten Free on the Forchstrasse in Zurich.

Hey Alessio,

I can also totally recommend Mr&Mrs Gluten Free, I go there whenever I can and they have the broadest (and best imho) selection of gf products in Switzerland - they also have frozen stuff, which is extremely uncommon here.

On top of the classical supermarkets and Mueller, you may also look at

- Egli, in Zurich HB, having also some good pastries

- Ultimo Bacio, close to Wipkingen, a bio shop with some gf items. Beware of the fresh items though: I was once there and I remember a fresh "gluten-free" pastry in the middle of normal pastries, so contamination likelihood was 100%...

If you are looking at online opportunities to buy, this is this meta-website with a couple of very useful links to shops that ship to Switzerland:

Finally, as you already know being Italian, a week-end in Italy by car might be extremely useful to refill the kitchen with variegate and good stuff at the same time arbitraging a bit on prices - the Esselunga in Varese is a good example of a place where I spent quite a bit of money!

Even if not asked by the OP but only later in the thread, there is an official list of "certified" gluten-free restaurants from the Coeliac Association:

http://zoeliakie.ch/images/PDF/2014/...astroliste.pdf

Please note that they update the list quite often, so the link might become obsolete soon but the new link can be found from the homepage of zoeliakie.ch

The other source of information I use to search for gf restaurants, though not necessarily certified, is this website by Schaer:

Hope it helps!

Kerala at bucheggplatz in Zurich has Gluten marked on the menu.

The Swiss German Celiac Association has a great pdf of restaurants with gluten free options. You can download it here: http://www.zoeliakie.ch/index.php/restaurants-hotels

Hey Thanks a lot for the link..it is going to be useful....
