goats milk

Hi

Reading recent threads about what you can't get/miss in Swiss supermarkets has got me wondering whether it will be difficult to get goats milk over there. I know it's readily available in the bigger French hypermarkets - often as UHT - but not sure about the Swiss ones. I've tried to look at the Migros site but searching chevre just brings up a load of cheeses.

Does anyone know if I'm right in saying that only cows milk can be described as milk in Switzerland? Ie if I'm after goats milk then it wouldn't be lait du chevre or chevre lait, for example, but chevre something else

thanks

Sorry, I haven't come across goates milk - haven't really looked but , in the off chance that you're after goat's milk due to lactose intolerance, I can tell you that Migros do a very good lactosefree milk and yoghurtS!

I've seen goats milk in my local Coop which is quite a big one, it is also easily found in health food shops. Heck there is a Deli in Zug that even sells horse milk .

Our neighbours have plenty of goats. I love goats cheese and yoghurt but can't stand the milk in my coffee no matter how hard I try - what do you want it for? Just very interested.

Thanks Lou and Mel - it doesn't sound as though it's going to be difficult to get hold of although it has to be said the migros lactose free option has slightly more appeal than the horse milk .

Hi GrumpyG

I've always given it to my daughter in preference to cows milk, which I've found causes dry and eczema-like skin conditions. I can't say it appeals to me either and I use cows milk for the little I have in coffee too!

Sheep's milk is easily available if that is an option for you.

Thanks Milagro - that's helpful to know as it's very close in structure.

I'm just waiting for someone to suggest squirrel's milk now ...

Goats milk is also in Switzerland tagged as goats milk so in the french part you can ask indeed for lait du chèvre or lait du brebis ( sheeps milk)

Swiss german it'll be Geissmilch or Schafsmilch

Yeah you can also pick up fresh goats milk from farmers (there's even one in Zollikon).

But what you really want is donkey milk. I ain't kiddin' you, but donkey milk goes for 110 Euros a litre. Why? Cuz it cures whooping cough (pertussis). Little know fact I picked up from my favorite farmer the other day.

Yep, just seen goat's milk in the Coop in Zug.

Last week I bought some the Appenzeller ziege milch at Coop, it said to be made from a pretty rare goat from Appenzell.

It wasn't bad, but I think I'll stick to cow milk, to me, the taste is way too strong to drink it at breakfast, it tastes way to much like lamb meat.

Yuk that sounds vile

for anyone interested in an opinion on goats milk & children here's one of many:

Thanks for this link, she has very good info on nutrition, including men and women's health, and I have not found anything yet which is contradicted by recent research, which is very dificult not to do! So great site, thanks

Haha, I actually misread the title "goatse milk" ..... damn, I internet far too much.

note: many of you might not get this....

Goat milk, goat cream, goat cheese, goat yoghurt and goat sausage are available at a farm in Vogelsang just outside Lengnau AG

(Strawberry goat yoghurt is a step too far for me...)
