I am a teacher/tutor in the States, and I'm planning to continue my work during this year in CH. In the states I charged $50/h. I'm not sure what the going rate to charge is, however. Does anyone have any experience with private english tutoring here? Any ideas what a reasonable rate might be?
It all depends who you are tutoring and where. Adult business people in Zurich would be CHF100/hour and more. The other end of the scale, children in the country CHF40-50/hour...
In Lausanne a friend of mine does this and was quite shocked to find out that the 50 euros an hour he earned in Paris turned into between 30 and 40 CHF here in Switzerland. So in Paris tutoring was very lucrative for him given the standard of living...in Switzerland, not so much. He asks for 40 if he is expected to go to their place to teach- if the students are willing to come closer to his home he asks for thirty or even twenty-five. When he charged 50 CHF an hour he got not bites, Lausanne being a university town.
There is a qualified English teacher offering lessons in the local Neuchatel paper for 29 chf an hour, 42 chf for an hour and a half and 42 chf an hour for 2 people. They even offer Cambridge exam preparation.
I guess there must be more people offering the service doown here which pushes the price down a bit.
Yes I've seen that one and the mind boggles! I swap hour for hour with my cleaner (for her kids) - but most cleaners charge more than that even up here in the mountains. Providing a suitable room, having all the materials, books, CD's, worksheets + worksheets made to measure, etc, a good Degree and 30+ years experience, the rate is silly. Still...
