going to a church

Dear all,

Im wondering to know if I can go to a church in zurich to see what's happening there, (I'm not christian however) and which day or what time is appropriate to pay a visit? anybody familiar with Chilehuus Grünau church?

With a name like that, I wouldn't expect to understand the service unless you're a local.

The question has been ask before:

[Church recommendation [Zurich, nondenominational]](http://www.englishforum.ch/family-matters-health/80757-church-recommendation-zurich-nondenominational.html)

Specifically Protestant:

(Question) Where is English church in Zurich? (protestant)

Specifically Catholic:

Catholic church in Zurich

Google is your friend.

Most churches have some kind of service on Sunday mornings, but the times you'll have to ask them about.

The Church of Latter Day Saints, is always a good place to start.

Ahem. Sure.

Most churches have a website where they announce service times etc, so that might be a good place to start. Virtually all churches are open to newcomers and if you just come along to see what they are like you won't be entering any obligation to join. So just come along, listen to and watch what they do and make up your own mind.

It might also help if you talk to friends to find out what would suit you best as different churches have different styles (affecting music, prayer etc), from very tradition to very, um, innovative, and may also vary in the details of what they believe or what they make out of it.

if ever you found yourself visitng London UK, this is a church with a difference, main services held on a Sunday, central London

you dont have to be a member & no obligation to return. When you enter you decide when to sit upstairs or downstairs

There's a scientology church near altstetten.

Hi e.kazemi,

The one you mentioned (Chilehuus Grünau) is just a building used by several different Christian churches. They probably have a bulletin board outside the building with details of which church uses it at which time. Each of these will have their own style of worship - if you have an idea what kind of church service you would like to visit, maybe we can advise you a little better.

Note that if the name of the church is written in German, the service will be in German. I don't know how important it is to you to understand the language, or if you just want to take in the atmosphere.

You might want to tour a church with a 1000 year old history.

Yeah there is a board unfortunately in german! actually the pray is not such an issue for me to understand! thus if they speak german that does'nt matter. I want to see someone in the chuch and have some disscussion with her.

I go to a church in Lausanne, its call C3. http://ccclausanne.ch

I love it, get services, friendly atmosphere. I know they have connections with some people in zurich.

Here you go : http://www.hlt-altstetten.ch/

They have an english translation service during the first meeting and their gospel doctrine class is given in English.

That's virgin on the ridiculous.

In short, sure. I possibly only speak for the Protestant churches, where you can go to the "service" (Gottesdienst) on Sunday at 9am/10am without any problem and without being registered

The "sermons" are in Standard German and not in dialect of course

The Grünau Church is part of the reformierte Kirchgemeinde Zürich-Altstetten. You'll find the agenda here: http://www.kirchealtstetten.ch/conte...index_ger.html

If you would like to experience a more modern service, come to the "Impuls" on Sunday nov. 20, 17h at the Kirche Suteracher (near GZ Loogarten). http://www.kirchealtstetten.ch/Calen...alender_Detail

As I am a member of the protestant church, I can tell you that everyone is welcome to "come and see".

If you'd like to know more, send me a pn > I'll be there on nov. 20.
