I am looking for a butcher than can provide good cuts of lamb and beef, things like big rib-eye steaks, beef rib suitable for braising and lamb shanks.
More importantly what is a lamb shank and a rib eye steak in German
I am aware of Globus but i am sure a smaller Metzgerei would offer more for less
This is a late response, but there's a small butcher in Altstadt called Blätter. It's on Stadthofstrasse near the corner of Lowenstrasse (sort of near Bourbaki Panorama). It looks pretty good, but I'm not sure how prices compare.
That said, I think Globus does have a good butcher section and one should feel no shame using it. And I know it doesn't feel right (especially for those into locally grown/raised food), but we've had luck at the butcher in the large Migros on Hertensteinstrasse. Surprisingly good luck.
Can't help with the German names for cuts of meat.
I am going to let you in a on a secret. I just went and bought a wok in this wonderful kitchen shop in Luzern, the woman was telling me there is this amazing organic farm about a 15 minute bike ride where you can buy meat straight from the farmers. It is open on a Friday afternoon after 2pm and Saturday 8 am - 1 pm.
It is good, we have bought a lot from here & my wife has a weekly order for her special needs home she works at. All kinds of cuts/meat & so fresh & untinkered with you need to season well when cooking.
They also do a barbecue selection, sell olots of other farm produce, very friendly & highly recommended place to shop!
Oh thanks for letting us know. I want to go out and get some meat next week before my nan and pop come to stay. Did they have whole chickens which I could use for a roast?
To all of you who have been to this butcher, do they speak English and do they have turkeys for christmas?
Sorry for all the questions but do you have the address too? I have checked their website but it is all in German and It looks like they have a market going on this weekend that I would like to check out.
