Good night everybody

Brought the hotwater bottle to operating temperature, got the jammies on and alexa is singing bed time songs.
Because…:
Christmas over and it’s back with my ass to the grindstone tomorrow, so nighty night.

Jeez. Another night without sleep.
Tried counting sheep.
Tried making my head empty of thoughts, not a high bar to begin with.
Tried Glass of warm milk.
Going to watch telly.

A few sprays of melatonin under my tongue and I’m usually out like a light.

Uggg! Happy-bloody-Monday.

Lie back, close your eyes.
Think of an obscure word - it can be anything.
Let’s pick Slammer.
Think of every word that you can think of that begins with first letter “S”,
When/If you run out, then
Think of every word that you can think of that begins with second letter “L”:
Rinse and repeat;

I betcha you don’t get beyond “M”.

Oh I know that one, problem is that I get into competition with myself and that is really hard to shut down once started.

Do it in French or Romanche. TIS

He lives in Germany.

Actually the best Method I have found is a few Drops of Cannabis oil. Only that stuff is just so expensive.

A hot water bottle on the abdomen, chest or lower back will knock you out in 10 mins.

This goes against every principle of human physiology (i.e a drop in skin temp is the trigger for sleep) but I love these old wives remedies :+1:t2:

It’s the drop that’s important (as you said)

But you need to be warm enough for a drop in temperature and many people can’t get to sleep with cold feet or being cold in general so they need to warm them up first so they can cool down and fall asleep.

I have loved hot water bottles since I was a kid.
I grew up in a Blackburn Victorian two up two down with a coal fire downstairs and nothing upstairs…
A single pane sash window that made the most incredible frost flowers. The bed was always freezing cold. And you had to claim it inch by inch and hot water bottle was the way to do it.

Other side of the Pennines but a similar experience here.
We used to take our clean clothes for the next day to bed with us so they weren’t freezing çold and we could get dressed under the covers before we emerged into the cold.

We had horsehair mattresses in my Scottish boarding school. The bedframes were cold steel. A water bottle was a survival tool, as were piles of blankies. I hated getting up in the morning to pour the pitcher of ice-cold water into the bowl so I could bathe my face before ringing the wake–up bell for the dormie at 6.

I used to enjoy thawing out a windowpane by blowing on it until the ice was all gone, ir slip a fingernail beween glass and ice to get the biggest ice sheet.
…was telling this to my grandkids the other day, explaining that we would do that for fun as there was no internet back in the day. I got the kind of look as if should be wearing a bearskin and brandishing a club

Charles Dickens must have had a Time Machine.

“a drop in skin temp”. Then maybe go outside in zero degrees to sleep.

Yes, a hot water bottle can significantly help with sleep by promoting relaxation, soothing aches, and regulating body temperature

, creating a cozy environment that signals your body it’s time to rest, much like a warm bath, improving comfort and sleep quality. It helps by easing muscle tension, relieving pain (like cramps), and boosting circulation, which helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer, but ensure it’s wrapped or used safely to avoid burn

Wait untill I tell you about the outside crapper next to the ginnel. Now THAT is a piece of leftover Victoriana I remember vividly, it had a green door, planks nailed to the typical “Z” frame and the bottom was rotted, it made for a drafty crap and it let the snow through in winter. Ochre daubed brick walls white porcelain crapper with a black backelite seat and a chain operated cistern.
There was a bit of luxury though, it had a one bar electric fire.

Come to think of it …perhaps the good old days were not all that good.
