We would be soon moving to Zurich and at the moment searching for apartment. I am a bit lost in that so I want to ask you for an advice: where is good (ie. green, quiet ) place for family in Zurich? Eg is Hongg good? I also need kinderkippe nearby and kindergarten. For us it would be better to sent our children to typical swiss kindergarten with Swiss children because they already speak some German (at home we speak our native language) and we don't want them to be confused with too many languages.
Have a look in google maps at the apartments from Homegate. It will give you an idea of green space etc. Also SBB for an idea of the commute to work. If your are working late, see what time the service stops.
Höngg is a decent place, lots of parks and forests nearby. Witikon might be an alternative, same as in Höngg (though it's somewhat off, but still easily accessible by public transportation). Maybe also have a look at Seebach or Wollishofen.
I would advise against Kreis 4 and 5, not necessarily family-friendly, imo.
You may also want to look outside the city. The area is densely populated so you may barely notice you even left the city and sometimes it takes you less time to get into Zurich from a town outside than navigate across the city to get from home to work.
and which village is nice ? we want something not so far from Zurich as my husband works in the City and he doesn't want to travel too long. We have two little kids and he needs to help me
Ah, but can they handle Swiss-German as a foreign language?
For info, it is an old cliché to think that children can get confused by too many languages. All research, especially CLIL-orientated, prove the contrary.
I once visited Witikon - very nice and quiet place, and has good connection - trolleybus. Too bad the flat was gone so quickly. I think Adliswil is also nice and with a good train connection.
Horgen and Thalwil are also nice (by the lake), with a train connection, but they might be rather expensive.
Well, if you have some serious cash available, you can rent an apartment or house on the "Goldküste", i.e. the right side of the lake (towns such as Zollikon, Herrliberg, Küsnacht, Erlenbach).
If you have a little less cash available, you can look at the other side of the lake (Adliswil, Thalwil, Horgen). Still expensive, though, but this is Zurich and Zurich suburbs, it'll be expensive no matter what.
A different direction, though also nice, green and child-friendly, close to Zurich (15-20mins), yet considerably less expensive is e.g. Regensdorf (same direction as Höngg, a bit further out).
You can't really go wrong with most places outside the city, this is Switzerland, it's tiny, there's no such thing as a "long commute" if you live in the same canton you work in, often not even if you live in a different canton. None of the above places is further away from the city than 20 km/12 miles or a 20mins train ride.
What part of Zurich will your husband work in? Connections are normally well timed, but it is still a nice plus to live on a train line which passes close to the office.
I like living in Altstetten and see lots of families around here. The area seems really family-friendly and there's tons of family homes/houses here too...
