After months and months of waiting for Google to roll out their voice (Skype-like service), I logged into gmail this evening, from Uster, to see that it's now enabled. Free calls in 2010 to the US and Canada.
I am in Switzerland. It works without proxy by-pass or other tweak. I just can't upgrade my account as it says I need a valid US phone number for this.
Can you explain what you mean by your post? I've had Google voice two US phone numbers (differing by just one number) and used the call forward and international services extensively while I lived there (to my various US phones..i.e. office, cell, home). It is still used for US folks to leave me a voicemail if necessary.
I'm not sure what you are referencing to here in Switzerland regarding Google Voice as it only serves US now per my understanding/experience.
The service here is limited at the moment. It doesn't give most of the options available to users in the US (dialling into the google service with an allocated number, call screening, etc.) but it does allow you to call phones from your Gmail chat box. Calls to the US/Canada are free. Calls to other destinations have Skype-like charges.
has anyone tried if that works on Android phones as well, if they're set to US English?
I also received the message and 20 cents of calling credit. I tried it - works like a charm from Switzerland. calls to Swiss landlines are 2 cents per minute. cheaper than Cablecom's 6Rp...
