GPS/SatNav for speed camera locations?

My wife and I each keep on getting caught by these damn mobile grey cameras. We're not even fast drivers. I don't suppose anyone has any sexy software or a SatNav product that can warn about them?

Alternatively, you could learn to drive.

You must be if you connect with those grey boxes too often

This consequences discussed in thread make for interesting reading:

Not for Switzerland, since such devices are illegal.

If you keep getting caught take your foot of the damn accelerator pedal. Or set your cruise control to the exact speed limit. It’s not rocket science.

I admire your honesty, I would have just blamed the wife.

Our SatNav doesn't warn us about speed traps, but it does show the speed limit for where we're driving in real time. Even on freeways it shows the changes from 120 to 100 etc. quite accurately. It's only accurate for the fixed zones, so we do have to pay attention to construction areas or when traffic is heavy and they change the speed limit signs digitally.

I thought it was not allowed to have warnings for speed traps here?

My TomTom does not warn me here, as it actually does in the UK.

And similar to what 3wishes wrote, keep an eye on the satnav and you should be ok with any speed trap (just remember to update it regularly and keep an eye on roadworks )

It’s not which is why you get no warnings.

Actually Tom Tom is quite good if you have a heavy foot. Since it reads the speed limits in real time when you go 5 kms+ over the limit it starts bonging at you. It gets quite irritating, but will stop when you take your foot off the pedal.

Also like the way it does get around warning you of speed cameras in France - it calls them “danger zones” instead and gives about kilometer either side of the actual camera position as the “danger zone”.

Pay attention to the locals. They no where the metal cams are.

Also look ahead at the traffic. Usually breaks lights appear suddenly in unusual places!

Otherwise Slow down take it easy!

TomTom but you have to pay for the service.

And it's illegal in Switzerland. You could start a statistics on how often you get caught by a "blitzer" and how often for having the warning-device and then do the math.

Did you pay for this service of TomTom? I know it's not free but I think one can have it (what does TomTom care in the end, right?).

Yes I was thinking TomTom but looking at the website ; indeed its not available in CH. Useful for driving through France though.

Rather annoying as had 2 tickets this year both 2km/h over.

Thanks k_and_e for the helpful input regarding learning to drive; we obviously need to.

Still, if you have your TomTom on, watch the speeds it indicates and watch where you are driving, you shouldn ́t get a ticket (no need for warnings). TomTom is much more exact in determining your speed than what the car tells you

If they are MOBILE speed traps, the only 100% solution is to use a radar detector and a laser jammer.

This shop in Germany has all the stuff you need: http://www.radar-shop.com/en/radar-detectors/

Also, Waze is really useful to avoid mobile cameras but not sufficient.

as someone who has been caught with a gps based camera warning system, I can tell you they are illegal here* you'll get a large fine and confiscation if you're caught with one

*any camera warning system is illegal not just gps based, you really want to lose your phone when they find camsam on it?? and they DO actively look for them and know what they are looking for!

Aaaaand the SatNav is...... ?

But is it illegal if the GPS tells you at which speed you should be driving and if you are exceeding it?

no its illegal if it warns you about camera locations

Which one does not warn you when you exceed the posted (better saved in the map file) speed limit

No. That's perfectly legal.

no. many cars even have that as a factory option.
