I am looking for a grocery store in Zurich that is similar to Central Mkt or Whole Foods in the US..
I have visited the usual migros/coop/fermo etc..but have not yet found one like Central market, which has a lot of different things from all around the world and also serves some really good food..
If anyone has come across any such store, pls let me know!
Whole Foods is widely located in the States, this page has a list of the states in which they have stores. California, Oregon, Washington State and, for good measure, British Columbia are on the list, so the West Coast seems pretty well covered
You might call it the Starbucks of supermarkets; very expensive, very loyal customers and, in these recessionary times, desperate to shed its (well deserved) nickname of "whole paycheck", see the NY Times article Whole Foods Looks for a Fresh Image in Lean Times : A search for "whole paycheck" (with the quotes) may enlighten you further.
You won't find the same kind of store at the same scale as Whole Foods or Central Market. But you can find comparable things at diverse locations.
Jelmoli by Bahnhofstrasse has a good International selection, and the food stands are also good. I like the Thai restaurant there. Globus also has decent grocery comparable, but not quite, to Bristol Farms.
As for health food, there are specialty stores they call Bio Laden here. There you will find macrobiotic stuff, organic produce and various kinds of tofu and tempeh.
At the Zurich Hauptbahnhof, there is an Italian grocery store that has good produce. I forgot the name. Maybe someone here can remember. I think it is called Marinello. Anyway, the produce guy was knowledgable and helpful.
Missing Whole Foods was one of the adjustments I had to make while living here.
I visited Globus today..though I found quite a few things, I feel like central market/whole foods offered many more choices (in the fresh produce section)..but overall I really liked the store :-) so thanks to everyone for your suggestions.
Jelmoli food section and bio laden are still on my list to check out next!
