Gruyère declared as world's best cheese

On the year that the judging was done in Switzerland…

Last year it was held in Portugal and a Portuguese cheese won.

I see a pattern emerging here.

Still, IMO, Gruyere cheeses are the best cheeses in Switzerland and easily the most complex taste wise.

That’s “Le Gruyère” to you! Nutty, round, sweet, yummy.

Except nobody calls in that in everyday conversation.

Le Gruyère is the name for the protected status, mainly because Switzerland gave up on trying to protect the name Gruyère alone.

Only if next year it is held in America.

Tillamook cheddar for the win!

100% deserved.

Ah, could they not have given them to help feed homeless, etc, instead?

"Tons of cheese were thrown in the trash after the World Cheese Awards were held in Bern, the Bund, the Berner Zeitung, 24 Heures and the Tribune de Genève reported on Monday. Of the 5244 cheeses judged last week, all ended up in the trash. “There were no other options,” Martin Spahr, head of the organising committee, told the newspapers, because only cheeses from the EU and a few other European countries can legally enter Switzerland.

Special permission was granted to the others, but with the obligation to destroy them after the event, he added. Since the cheeses were displayed next to each other, “an overseas cheese potentially contaminated with bacteria could have infected the neighbouring Emmental”."

Yet it was OK to taste the cheese for the competition. Can somebody bring a dose of common sense?
