I bought an acoustic guitar a few weeks ago, but the shop had easily as much electric equipment as acoustic...really helpful service. I live in Baden and visited the music store here which is nice, but the prices were higher than at the other shop. Also, something I didn't expect--I was able to haggle down the price of my guitar by about 100 francs--maybe this is normal, maybe abnormal--I'm not sure but glad I tried...oh yeah, I also got them to throw in a soft case for free. The shop is Music Kuhn at Brunngasse 18, about a ten minute walk from the main station in Zurich. Phone number 044 252 21 48. I wish you luck in your quest and if you are looking for people to play with let me know.
There's a guitar shop in Aemtlerstrasse 15, Kreis 3, off Birmensdorferstrasse, " Gitarren Total ", advertising as "best axes in town".
Bus 33/32 stops right in front of it (stop Zwinglihaus), or take trams 9/14 to Schmiede Wiedikon, then walk Birmensdorfer uphill to the sidestreet with the orthopaedic shop on the corner. (Incidentally, that's a kosher butcher across the street from GT )
Fun bit on their website: go to Service (the broken guitar at the bottom) and click on the ON/OFF switch of the amp. Duncan James, their repair man, does Hochdeutsch
I would also recommend Musik-Kuhn in Niederdorf http://www.musik-kuhn.ch/ , it's a friendly shop and they speak English Avoid Music Hug if you can, they tend to be a tad expensive.
There is a small very small shop just up from Starbucks at Bellvue, if you walk up to City Disc you will walk right past, there is also Jecklin at Kunsthaus where the shop right on the cross roads has acoustics (and other string instruments), if you carry on up the hill their second shop has electrics, drums, keyboards etc. Near central there is also CentralMusik on the street parallel to Niederdorf behind Starbucks.
If you have a car you could get out to Musik-Productiv near Lenzberg (I just bought a new Les Paul from them at the weekend, nice shop) or there is a large shop in Liestal near the train station (As with Ben I paid cash here and after haggling ended up paying around CHF350 less).
Hey, I'm going to be in Zurich next week & would like to buy a cheap (bizarre if possible) electric guitar. Can anyone point me towards the best music store or pawn shop for this?
As someone else has posted you can try "gitarren total" in Aemtlerstrasse, Wiedikon. They have the best selection but specialize in top end guitars. They are always helpful, friendly and speak good english.
For more mid price guitars you can try "pro music" in Sihlfeldstrasse near the locherhut tram stop (trams 2/3). They have a good selection of electric guitars for all styles of music.
The "bass centre" in Alstetten has started to stock more guitars but has a limited choice, I think is worth a visit.
Personally I would avoid Music Hug (Expensive and not a good selection), Music Kuhn (Very limited selection) and Central Music (not much to choose from).
Just my opinion based on what I look for in a guitar shop, depends what you need I guess.
I know I am late to the party but that Bass shop across from the train station in Altstetten sucks. If you know what you want or are just browsing then it's ok.
