Gummy bears - gelatine

Hi EFers

A video shows the rewound process of gelatine production. Some people in the news article are disgusted, others don't care.

WDEFT?

News article and video

I knew about gelatin and such.

What on earth does WDEFT stand for?

I have no idea but I would hazard a guess at 'What does EF think'.

What Does EF Think

I never eat Gummy Bears or similar for that very reason.

I like both bacon and Gummibears, never tried them at the same time though.

Bacon is fine with maple syrup, I might have to try it.

Recently had Sausages with gummibears in them.

these days you can get vegetarian gelatine

WDEFT? I think that's how you get gelatin... cute piglet, picked for maximum emotional impact I reckon.

I'm not sure of the moral or nutritional value to be found by the use of vegetarian gelatine in sausages. Please explain.

The best gelatine comes from connective tissue of young veal and pigs.

An envorinmentally concious person would have a more positive image of gummi bärli after seeing this. Except for some traditional recipes (like frittole from calabria) no one wants to eat pork rind anymore, which I guess would be wasted (you can't put it in food animal anymore after the mad cow outbreak). They make good use of it.

Gelatine is used in an umpteen trillion things, most of which comes as a surprise to most people; wasn't there some kind of 'scandal' a few years ago about pork-based gelatins cropping up in unexpected delicacies such as Mars Bars?

@Markarina....Non-animal/vegetarian gelatine has been around for centuries, it's simply just not as cheap, nor as efficient, as animal gelatine for the job required.

That was whey

At the beginning of this year they also tried filling them with plastic, but that backfired too.

morning Efers

We had a Guy in the Restaurant a while back, that was claiming that some chocolates had beef blood as part of the basics in its production(?) He also said that most of it's from USA & GB, and it's for the colour.

Any truth in this ? or is it Hog wash (sorry, that's gelatine)

Ta in advance for input

'av a nice Hot sticky day y'all

Snopes.com generally has something about this type of claim.

Of course, then it becomes a question of if snopes can be trusted.

I think this is more disturbing:

What about chicken & waffles?

After Muktuk with soy and ketchup, few culinary combinations seem odd.

I find the video really shocking and am surprised that animal are slaughtered for consumption. It is good that products like meat and leather are produced in normal factories, otherwise I would immediately stop using them.

I am currently wearing the hide of a pig on my feet, there are cow horns holding my dress together, a sheep lost her coat for my coat, and the hard candy on my desk has "natural colouring"which possibly means beetles . Why would I be disgusted about the fact that gummy bears are made from pig carcasses?

Also, I learnt about gelatin in school, when I was 7 years old. No surprise there.

(Disclaimer: no, I am not a vegan. I find it good that every piece of a slaughtered animal is used, not just thrown away when the meat for consumption is removed).
