Gymnasiums in Vaud (Lausanne area) -- opinions and specialization

Hi,

I have been trying to figure out specialization of gymnasia in Vaud: we are probably moving this year and want to take this into consideration. I've found some info on the forum about ZH area schools, but nothing about Vaud. Would appreciate any info and personal opinion a lot!

Thanks,

KTZV

I do not know about Lausanne, but in my area of Vaud (la Cote) there is no specialisation. There is only one Gymnasium for the region, and all teens in the region and neighboring small villages go there. There are no options.

My understanding is that if a kid qualifies for gymnasium, (s)he can apply to any gymnasium in the canton, the location is not longer binding.

What I was told a few years back when I researched the topic, was that gymnasiums in Pully and close to Montreux were considered strong in sciences and math, and most of Lausanne gymis were more into humanities and sports/art. I have never heard anything about Morges gymnasium.

If one reads the forum about Zurich and their schools, the kids there choose between a few schools, depending on specialization. This is not how it works in Vaud?

I think you may need to just look through the descriptions of each gymnase listed here . E.g., Le gymnase Auguste Piccard héberge les classes spéciales pour artistes et sportifs d'élite de l'Ecole de Maturité (classes MS).

Les élèves ont également la possibilité d'y obtenir une maturité bilingue français-allemand.

I've already looked through official lists -- but they do not say much. For instance, I've heard about a very good math teacher in Auguste Piccard Gymnasium, and many kids there learnt much more math that one would expect in an art-oriented school. However the teacher has retired (or is going to retire soon)...

I hoped to get some input from EF parents about their kids in Gymnasiums in Vaud in general and in Lausanne /Morges in particular. As I said, I've seen quite a lot of similar info about Zurich area, but could not find anything about VD. Does it mean that all the EFs send their kids to international schools here???

Try to get MusicChick to respond - she works as a teacher in Vaud, and I think at one of the gymnases. Also, you could try the Lausanne-kids Yahoo group, which has a much larger population in the area. EF membership is skewed towards the German-speaking parts of the country.

Take a look at this chart of gymnases in 2012-2013:

http://www.vd.ch/fileadmin/user_uplo...eignees_ou.pdf

It shows which gymnase in canton Vaud offers which "options spécifiques" (majors) and "options complémentaires" (minors). However, the major and minor are only 2 out of 13 subjects. The maturité is a broad qualification and all gymnases require all pupils to take the other 11 subjects, in sciences, languages, etc, etc. The actual teaching should not be much different from one gymnase to another.
