We recently moved into a new apartment and we will like to hang a pinboard on the wall (120x80 cm, ~6kg).
We notice that many of the walls in our apartment are not concrete. Rather, they seem like cardboard walls (based on the sound). In our construction description, it says "weiss-putz" wall.
Is it ok to hang pinboard (and other photoframes) on such walls ?
Sounds like you have a plaster board wall? Also called drywall in American
There are various fixings you can use to hang heavier items to such walls, a 6kg piece should not be too much of an issue, esp. if you use more than one attachment point. The fixings typically have a wide thread screw or a small expandable metal plate that catches on the back of the wall.
Your local DIY store (Hornbach, Bau&Hobby, etc) will have a wide selection of such fittings, each with weight ratings as well. You may want to ask one of the assistants for assistance.
You may want to check with your landlord as well, but as long as you repair the holes when you leave you should be fine
Weiss-putz is simply a plaster like or "gips" layer as I've heard it called here. It comes in bags as very fine and is mixed with water. It can be applied to almost anything. Cardboard, masonry, old plaster, etc. You could ask your landlord what is underneath for your situation,
There are adhesive (no drill) options which might work for a pin board. Tesa has a Powerbond line which claims 100kg load per 1m strip of their adhesive tape. That might be an option if you don't feel like drilling holes or don't have easy access to the tools to do it correctly. It's one of those installations which may or may not go smoothly depending on the underlying material.
The walls are probably "gips karton." Somewhere along the wall behind the boards there might be wood supports. A stud sensor can find these but you can also knock on the wall.
If you are lucky and one of these is where you want to hang something, a wood screw will work.
For the rest, there are several products which work on drywall. If you know the thickness of the drywall that helps.
"Weissputz" is the finish of the walls. When you move you can buy filler to fill the holes.
In the above link they don’t show screws, but what they do show is the dübel and the little tool to install it. You don’t need a powerful drill at all. I have a Bosch pushdrive.
