I never wore my babies until number 3 and i find it is essential here as they dont have trollies for babies or 2 little ones so i carry the youngest and put my 2 y o in the trolley... although sometime i carry him. If the weather does get bad in the village this winter carrying will be so much easier for me than pushing a pushchair.
I started with just an ergo and now have added a stretchy panel wrap and a mei tai... am very temped with a mink lined mei-tai just seen with a hood
anyone else a baby wearer are there are any CH sites for trades/used wraps as got mine mine from uk sites and had them sent over...
Since I bought my ergo I'm getting a bigger and bigger fan of carrying my baby around everywhere I go.
Lausanne is not always stroller-friendly, and an ergo is so comfortable both for my baby and me that I use it quite a lot, to the point that my baby now tends to protest when she has to be in the stroller
There's a lot of information showing the benefits of baby wearing over the stroller/pram. Babies need constant human contact and it promotes a secure attachment between the baby and parents and thus improves self-confidence, less crying, etc.
Funny how other, more "primitive" cultures have known these benefits for thousands of years
Yeah, I'll be having my baby in a couple of months and I'm worried about back pain as well. Any suggestions? Also, does anyone recommend a sling over a baby carrier for newborns? I'll be breastfeeding. Thanks!
Really strong and beautiful material, I trusted it much more than one of the ones you do up with press studs.
I love love love the idea of carrying your baby, but like Nil, I found it a bit painful after a while, also if I was out for the day, I'd find it a bit impractical with a small baby.... I think it would be better now, get them off your back and walking on the floor.. hop!
But just too heavy... anyway, can totally recommend those slings.
I have the mei tai. I love it but like I said, I get pain in my back after a while. but it is totally practical and my son loves it. You can imagine his joy to rest his head on my boobs. The biggest and oldest dream of all men*...
I'm still using my Ergo carrier on the odd occasion for my "baby" who is 3 and a half! He loves walking but I found when we spent this summer up in the mountains that about 5k was his limit .. after that he was happy to scramble up onto my back and the carrier meant I could carry him much further and more comfortably than just giving him a piggy back.
I am not so tall and find this style of carrier so much better than the big framed back pack carriers as you hold the baby much closer into your area of core strength.
I did a lot of research last night and I think I'm going to go with the Moby sling. Anyone wanna chime in about it? It's one of the most affordable ones and people are swearing by its comfort.
I'll then probably transfer to the Ergo carrier. A family member wants to buy that for us - thank the powers above cuz all this is getting expensive!
I used a Moby wrap for a few months, and I generally enjoyed it, but you may have to try a few different positions and/or carriers/wraps until you find the one that's best for you and your baby. My little boy grew so fast that he very quickly outgrew the Moby (because mine is made of stretchy material, it doesn't feel secure for bigger babies). I also found it difficult for a newborn. He didn't like feeling confined (strange, I know, as many newborns love to be swaddled, etc.), so the wrapping techniques that were recommended for newborns just weren't his cup of tea. Once I could let his legs hang free it was a different story, and then he really seemed to like it. One other trick with the moby though was to tie it really snuggly, as the fabric will stretch (unless yours is made of woven rather than knit jersey material). And one last downside: my baby is/was a spitter, and during the summer there were a few memorable incidents when he spit up down inside the moby wrap and my shirt. Made for a few very smelly excursions, as it's difficult to untie and remove baby once you're out and about. Anyway, those were my experiences, but as with anything baby related, your mileage may vary. Good luck!
The moby is a good stretch wrap... check out this wahm site she is highly recommended www.victoriaslinglady.co.uk she has stretchy wraps which are suitable for n/borns up to age of 2. It is not recommended for a back carry however she also sells sturdy wraps which you can use for a back carry. These are great for trying out before moving to more expensive ones. she sends abroad and her stretchy wraps are EU tested.
I have an ergo but there are lot of other SSC (structured soft carriers) which seem better and ergo beware there are a lot of fakes being sold.
There is a great group on facebook if you want to join lovely ladies on there also sites where you can get wraps which have been broken in...
there are a lot of benefits for carrying, the closeness, also the position is supposed to be better for growing baby and helps elevate the chances of baby having a flathead. forward facing isnt recommended though as the babies arent as supported and in the correct position. They should be supported by the thigh and not the crotch area.
So I spend 2 hours carrying my baby today and as much as I live it because I spend all that time with my nose in his hair and I can kiss him as much and often as I want, my back hurt... really hurt.
Wearing my baby is good when my 3 years old is too tired at night to walk and she sits in the stroller while I carry my boy. But otherwise, he is in the stroller for my back's sake.
I carried mine a lot in my ergo. Brilliant. But he's 16kg now and I can't carry him for long. Hubby has finally (first time a couple of months ago) carried him in it so I don't have to any more. Yay! But if it's just me and munchkin, we take the buggy and mix with walking.
We bought a buggy board, so my older son had the opportunity to stand on it when he was too tired. I love carrying around my baby, but my back hurts as well, even more when I have to run after a four years old with a bike...
We have that one too but we never use it. My daughter won't bother to stand on it... She sits in the stroller only when we go out and come back late. Since here we walk a lot, sometimes she gets too tired to walk back home at night.
I loved carrying the kids- still carry the youngest in a manduca , at 2.5 years and around 18kg. Tho I am quite strong
I can even carry the 5 yr old 22 kg lad in this for an hour at the end of a long day.. though his feet tend to bang my knees a bit (kudos to the system(!!))
This system puts the weight of the kid on your hips, and if you adjust it correctly, gives you very little back pain.
Even a 20 year old Baby björn, I felt worked well, if you made sure the weight was low on your back - I see a lot of people putting the back-cross right between their shoulder-blades - big awa! Wear it lower.
The tragetuch I which I used for baby 1, just got too complicated for me, when I had more than 1 kid to think about. It also wouldnt go over all my winter clothes, or under my winter jacket, or was too hot in the summer etc..
It sounds great .. I am glad I am not the only one carrying someone on my back with their legs down to my knees (I am quite short!). So what is the difference between this and an Ergo carrier ... or is there not much?
I have an ergo and from what I can tell it's identical to a manduca. The ergo was a revelation after several months of a baby bjorn, taking all the baby weight on the hips makes a world of difference, and baby was MUCH happier in sitting position than being suspended by the crotch.
Have you tried a back carry, I find it so much easier with connor on my back than front gives me my hands free to chase after callum! little munchkin he also gets tried walking and so can pick him up them when he is fussing and carry him on my hip!
I tried a buggy board cause my friends all had them and their lo loved them my eldest refused to well he used it once and then told me he didnt like it! Im glad he did though cause made me decide to carry once i had connor wish i had with my others now! Just brought a new toddler mei tai for Callum to use as well.. will try and put some action pictures on.. love to see everyone elses!!
