That’s been going on for a long time now. They’re trying to scoop up as much data as possible to train AI.
Now the new problem is that a lot of the internet is already polluted with AI slop. Some tests showed that if you train AI with AI output, it eventually degenerates and becomes useless, so they want to get un-polluted data.
…untill that “new input” becomes useless itself.
In my view we… no… THEY are squandering “our” heritage for a few dollars.
I read the people all over are protesting with torch and pitchfork against Flock cameras, we should do the same with data centers.
Oh, there definitely is a backlash over datacenters. I expect it will become an election issue in the US.

All people see is the amount of resources that are bring poured into something that does not benefit us by people who are out of touch with reality.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that, despite arguments that AI can be created in such a way that it’s benign, it’s going to be used for nefarious purposes and/or cause trouble of its own accord. After all, some people don’t have a conscience and machines certainly don’t.
Well this whole AI shebang is created by highly intelligent people on the spectrum who cant comprehend that most people dont see their version of how humanity progresses.
Well! Actually what I find amazing about AI is I now have something to talk to that always agrees with me. Is always polite. Apologizes whenever at fault. And is always eager to give me advice on what I want to know or hear. Now if only it could wag it’s tail?

Why not use AI to find cures against existing ones, first?

Remember: the Wuhan Institute of Virology started its Gain of Function experiments to eventually find a cure against the world’s most deadly viruses.
But first, they had to make the existing viruses more deadly so that they could infect and kill bats.
