Having a Baby at Unispital Zurich

Hi there

I am due to have my baby at Universitätsspital Zürich in August and I was wondering if anyone knows with how many people do you share the room and the cost for a private room.

Many Thanks

You might have to change insurance for the private room. But tbh it’s not that bad sharing at least according to my wife, both our kids were born at Unispital and the staff on both occasions were brilliant. Congratulations and good luck

Maximum 3 people in a room. Both times I had a baby there (on basic insurance) I was sharing only with one other person, it depends a bit on how busy they are. Transfer into private room is expensive, about 1000CHF/night - you can find that info on page 11 of this booklet: https://www.geburtshilfe.usz.ch/schw...ber_Geburt.pdf

You can request a single room and pay the extra for yourself (no clue how much there), but there is never a guarantee. My wife got a single room for free since all multi-rooms were full. But it can also happen that the single rooms are taken and they will put you in a shared room.

You would have to do that before getting pregnant There is a waiting period of at least the length of the pregnancy. As to sharing: it was quite helpful to share with a more experienced mom the first time as I had no clue Hated it the second time around as my roommate was overrun with visitors all the time. But not enough to pay thousands of francs out of my own pocket. I guess you could see how it goes and if you really can't handle the company you could always ask for an upgrade on the spot if they have rooms available!

Maximum of three mothers + three babies. I had twins so officially, they wouldn't put me with more than one other mother.

(On the topic of babies, they only do rooming-in, but in my case, the nurses took my babies for a few hours so that I could get at least two hours of uninterrupted sleep.)

It's too late for insurance, but you can pay out of pocket for a single room. However, I think it depends on availability. I got lucky, everyone gave birth the week before so I got a room for myself without paying anything extra.
