Coming from Denmark, where we have public health care and that you are used to waiting lists and waiting in the hospitals in general, but of course still wanting the "best" for myself and my partner, but also thinking of the monthly costs, I am considering switching from the supplementary GG3 to GG1 with my insura Groupe Mutuel.
With Groupe Mutuel, the laMAL and GG1 covers all basic needs and public ward hospitalization, but only real difference between GG1, 2 and 3 is:
GG1 (69 CHF): Public ward hospitalization
GG2 (140 CHF): Private or public hospitalization with semi private room
GG3 (159 CHF): International private own room hospitalization.
In short: it's really all about comfort when you are hospitalized, nothing else.
My partner has the GG1 coverage and I have GG3, but I am considering the switch to GG1, mainly due to the fact that we don't travel internationally only in Europe (where laMAL+GG1 is enough), but also sher costs perspective 159 vs 69 per month, that's yearly 1908 vs 828.
My question really is here to EF, what supplimentary insurance do you have and have you ever really had use for it? Does you insurance have different coverage when speaking about the suplimentary insurance?
The so-called "private" insurance is more than hospital comfort. It lets you pick your physician/ surgeon/ anesthetist, etc. The top medical specialist will personally attend to you because s/he gets an extra personal fee.
Are you young, fit and not accident-prone (no dangerous sports!)? Then you might not see much value in such extra care. If you are above 40 and not perfectly healthy, you may want to have extra cover, particularly if you can afford it.
Well, yes, it is "only" about hospitalization. However, in case of childbirth, you can often get better treatment in a nicer medical facility, if you opt for a GG2 or GG3. Although, if something goes wrong during the birth, the birthing mother will usually get taken to the local hospital anyway. Also, many private medical facilities do not perform a cesarean, but only not birth. For that again you need to go to the hospital.
But, a major difference again is with GG2 and GG3 you can have free choice of doctor for treatment anywhere in Switzerland (world if GG3, although max reimbursement is Swiss prices for the procedure, ie. if the price is 300 abroad by 200 in CH, you only get 200, plus bills have to be in French, German or English). The free choice is good, since if there is a specialist somewhere here in CH (or elsewhere) you just go there.
