Hello and Knitting!!

Hi all,

Im new here, not to Switzerland, but to the English forum. I just moved to Basel from Lausanne and since Im not working at the moment, finding new friends is a bit difficult.

I have decided to start a knitting/crocheting get together at the Starbucks here in Basel (the one on Centralbahnplatz closest to the central train station). I posted on Glocals 2 weeks ago but only had one person show up. We had a great time, but it would be nice if more people would be able to come meet up with us.

Meetings are at 6pm on Thursdays. Our second meeting will be this week on Thursday, 16 May. Hope to see you there!

Hi Katie!

Welcome to Basel. The knitting get-together sounds like fun. I'm going to be superbusy the coming 6 weeks, but I'd be happy to join you guys later!

Welcome to a fellow knitter!

Thankfully, the weather is still pretty miserable, hence more reason to knit cozy stuff..

If you want, you can set up a reoccurring even in our social calendar. Basel is big, I am sure you will slowly pick up a number of knitters. I will come if I am there.

Hello Katie,

I will ask my wife if she would like to join. She also does knitting, and since we moved here form the US two months ago, she is also looking to do things and meet new friends.

Cheers.

I wonder if you're a member of Ravelry? There is a Swiss Knits group, where people regularly organise local knitting groups. I don't know about Basel in particular but it's well worth having a look. (I just moved to Regensdorf and am looking forward to meeting the Zurich knitters soon!)

If you aren't yet on Ravelry, btw, you're in for a wonderful surprise...

I'm moving to Basel in July - I know it's a while away but I really hope you're still doing this by the time I get there! I'm moving from York and I'm really going to miss my craft group so it would be great to meet fellow knitters/crocheters when I get to Basel!

Here's the link to the only Basel group I've been able to track down on Ravelry. You need to join Ravelry to see it, but that's not a great hardship!

The group is called Knit and Natter Basel and seems to meet at the Starbucks on Claraplatz, Wednesdays at 5pm.

There's 70 pages of posts to plough through but they were still active a few days ago so I'd suggest you just go along.

The Geneva Stitch'n'Bitch is still going strong (also on Wednesdays at 6pm, Starbucks, Quai des Bergers 23), in case anyone's interested!

Phew, you have all just saved my sanity. Heaven knows why I didn't think of searching Ravelry, I've been a member for ages. I am moving to Basel in September and I've just bulk bought a load of crochet cotton here in the UK

Do you know of any good yarn stores?

Hello

Sadly I'm not local and can't join in, but do you mind if I take the opportunity to ask a question?

Just taking up knitting. I do scarves, scarves, scarves, scarves and scarves.

I've got some beaUtiful wool and I'd like to make a hat for the winter. Does anyone have any links to nice patterns which are suitable for starters?

Thanks

(Oh and if there's a more relevant thread for this kind of thing, I'd be glad to use it next time.)

PS - what do you think of soy/soy-wool blends? They look gorgeous.

You could do worse than join Ravelry, they are a very helpful bunch from all o er the globe and there are tons of free patterns. You can search by yarn type, beginner, intermediate etc

Yes, definitely do a search on Ravelry.

Perhaps you could also try using the search function to see if there are any groups local to you, it's just possible that you'll find some people near enough to join up with occasionally.

Thank you Liggsy and Anjela.

Just joined that website - it's brilliant!

Have you made a hat yet?

Hi Katie,

Are you still doing the knitting/crocheting get together at the Starbucks here in Basel?

Do you still start at 18H? What time do you end?

Regards,

Tzu Chen

I'm not in the Basel area (unfortunately stuck down here in Ticino) but I AM a knitter and just started my next sweater. Hope you've found lots of new friends and have organized a great "Stitch-n-bitch"

By the way, if anyone is looking for easy instructions for making a sweater (also suitable for beginners), I highly recommend:
