Helmet Cameras

So, I was thinking of getting the OH one of these for Christmas. GoPro just released the Hero 3 camera with 3 models - white, silver and black. Of course, on first looks, I thought - must get the best...but now having doubts! We would mostly use it for skiing, but I imagine that with kiddos, using it in water might be something we would consider. I guess the other one to consider is the Hero 2, but it seems like they made some good improvements with the 3 line...

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with these cameras? Which one they prefer (Contour, GoPro or other). The price point for the 3 models are 249€, 349e or 449€. Or maybe it is back to the drawing board for a good idea for under the tree. And I thought I had it all solved

a few people i know use them when off roading, it all comes back to the gopro as the best one.

the contour is good but if the lens is damaged then its an issue, go pro just replace the case at the worst - you can buy a lens cover on its own.

make sure you use a class 10 card for good results.

look in ch for costs as well as i noticed the euro price is a lot higher.

Thanks...it looks like the Black one is about 500 CHF here, so not much difference in price...but still need to look. I am really just trying to decide which, if any, model to get!

I bought the GoPro 2 before the release of the 3 earlier this year to add to my ski attire.

It is fantastic, I love it. I am still getting used to angles and settings etc and will be reporting back to another thread in the new year with some feedback and videos, as well as any tips I have found.

With regards to the GoPro 3, I did do some brief reading. All I would say is be careful, as the way I understood it and as you have mentioned, the scope has changed and they have relased 3 different specs. The first two are not as good as the Go Pro 2 as I understand it, and I am not sure how much better the best / most expensive one is compared to the 2 i.e. is the spec the same but more settings options, or is it an improved camera, more frames per second, etc etc. There was some techy guys on the last thread so may be they will come and chip in with more details (i am relative novice).

I saw an article recently about a Contour helmet cam with built in GPS. I personally have a drift hd-170 which I find very good.

Not sure if you've seen this thread which discussed Go-Pro and other cameras

i don't know anything about the camera, but you might wanna check it out:

I have the GoPro 2 for about a year now and I must say it is worth every penny. All the other brands cannot compare in picture quality/accessories. The new edition gopro 3 improved upon this with built in wifi, slimmer body and a few more technical nifty updates. Just get the GoPro and you won't regret it.

Here a video I shot last winter up in Davos with the GP2

i also have the gp2. would love the gp3, but don't use it enough to warrant buying it.

Thanks for the replies! Nice video, Medster, but I have a feeling I need a course in video editing/making! What software did you use?

Am seriously considering the black model of the 3 as all reviews I've seen say it rocks...and what the heck, I don't make the money, just spend it

I would definitely go for it, u won't be disappointed 😁. I used the built in software IMovie on my MacBook Pro. My videos aren't good enough to warrant anything more professional than iMovie at the moment. Maybe one day 👍 iMovie is very easy to learn and has great built in tools to keep you busy for hours.

another reason for the OH to get a mac book...well, our PC is about to die, I have put off the Blue Screens of Death for now...but they are lurking I will have to play around with the windows version for now, but I think I read somewhere that the GoPros don't work so well with the Windows format. Problem is, I have done too much research that at this point, I don't remember the details...

I surveyed the gift receiver last night when asking how much I *could* spend and it seemed like as long as it is a good present, than that amount would be acceptable .

I've used windows Movie maker in the past, it seems to accept most formats and is relatively easy to use. Also You Tube has it's own editor, and google have added an extension to chrome to allow you to edit video's. I have no experience of the latter two so don't know how good they are

Windows movie maker should work but personally I haven't worked with it in years. If you're in the market for a new laptop then I would definitely recommend a mbp (Mac book pro). Has everything u need right out of the box.

It just works 😄😁😝

After a bit more research I am really having trouble deciding (my life long problem...)

From what I have seen, the GoPro Black has great/superb video, tons of options to mount, Wi-fi to connect to phones or tablets but has a longer learning curve to figure out how to use it. It is also priced at 530 CHF or so for the basic set up.

The Sony HDR AS15 , Sony's first Action Cam, has great video (imo) but apparently has crappy mounts and I believe once inside the case you can't record sound nor access the microphone jack. Also has an app to control via phone/tablet. Priced at 300 CHF

The third one is the Drift HD Ghost which looks really nice, priced similar to the GoPro Black, but easier to use (according to reviews I have read/seen). But, it isn't available in Europe right now (but maybe I could get one shipped from the US from a relative and right now you get $100 free accessories ) App coming soon for phone/tablet control.

So, what would you do? Anyone care to comment on user friendliness or lack thereof for the GoPros?

Mainly we want something to take videos of the kiddos and to use while skiing. So being able to see what we are recording would be nice (it looks like they all can frame shots via wifi - the Drift app hasn't yet been released). Maybe an action cam isn't what we need but rather just a more rugged video camera... Too many choices!

I guess the since GoPro is the industry leader it might be the best choice ...maybe I'll have a relative ship it over from the US since it is $399 there and a bunch of places over here say shipping in 4 weeks or even in January...

This is taken using the drift HD-170, so slightly older model than the drift ghost, but you us going from light to shadow and no real problems, very simply to use and you can adjust the lens angle (which I got wrong on this one), it also has a zoom capability as well, the thing I like about it is that it has a goggle strap mount so you don't have to fix it to the top of the helmet

Thanks! If you're using it in your hand to take videos, can you see what you're shooting on the lcd screen? The zoom is nice as well, I don't think other action cameras have it. Will read up more on it - the wi-fi is intriguing to me as you can see what you are doing better, although the app isn't yet released. That seems to be standard on the new fleet of models that were released

yes you can see what you are filming on the LCD, useful if you are stationary filming someone, the drifts also have a remote control, least ways mine does.
