Is there a nice german speaking EFer who can help me write a quick letter to the school? My son fell yesterday on the way to his PE lesson banging his head hard, sustaining a large lump and a grazed scalp. He felt a little dizzy and his head hurt and informed his teacher. As he wasnt able to jog with the rest of the class due to a headache, he walked at the back of the group. His PE teachers reaction? To jog back to him, grab his wrist forcefully and pull him forward. My son said his head hurt and told the teacher not to grab him that way, the teachers response was to grip him hard round the back of the neck, with his fingers pressed in hard and to shout in his face.
I'm not happy with this at all. I'm only just a few days out of hospital and don't feel up to a discussion with the schulleiter today. I went to the school yesterday to speak with his class teacher and got myself stressed which I'm not supposed to do. She said I need to speak to the schulleiter and I'm just not up to it this morning, so am going to send an email.
Am I over reacting to this manhandling by his teacher? Yea, we used to get the strap by teachers when I was at school, it was a set punishment given out by the headmaster. I had it once and dealt with it. I think this is different though. My son said it hurt when he was grabbed, he wasn't being held lightly by the wrist or neck, he was being squeezed hard. His class mates told me the teacher has a habit of gripping kids necks when he is cross with them. I think he's a bully, and this is the same bloody teacher I had the problem with on my mean teacher thread. So glad he's retiring in a few months.
anyway, if anyone can help me with my letter writing, could you drop me a line, I'd be very greatful.
Kid bangs head. Feels dizzy and has a headache? The teacher should have ensured that he was seen by a doctor as soon as possible. Surely (even) a PE teacher would understand what concussion is and the potential dangers?
( When my son had a knock on the head during gym, and had a nose bleed, he was taken to the doctor immediately ).
OMG. I'd be really upset by something like this too. The teacher should have seen if your son had concussion - minimum. What's the law here for a teacher grabbing a child? They'd be fired back home.
Hope this all works out for you, your son and family. Some people just shouldn't be teachers.
Sorry late in getting back to this thread, was away for the holidays so couldn’t reply.
Anyway, after my perfectly written letter in German to the Schulleiter, (thanks Prof) I received an email from him and also a letter from the teacher involved. The teacher gave his version of what had happened, similar to the version of my son although he said he was restraining him to stop him running off. He did shout at my son (N) after (N) told him to get off or he’d go and report him to the police !!
What I forgot to mention the in the original post was that I took my son in to speak with his class teacher about what happened. My son became very defensive when she was questioning him, and didn’t improve the situation by shouting to her “ Well Herr ****** is a grumpy old @rsehole and I’ll punch him next time he tries to touch me again” then he stomped out of the room and left me to deal with it. Of course I said that he was obviously very upset about what had happened.
So back to the email, the Schulleiter had gone over what I’d said, what the teacher had said, then what his class teacher had reported to him. Was amusing having a formal German letter with “grumpy old @rsehole” half way through the sentence.
He asked about a solution to which I said I don’t want my son in that teachers class anymore, so they have changed his PE lessons.
I asked other kids in his class also just to see what they said, as sometimes my son’s versions of events get elaborated, but they all say Herr ****** “thing” is to grab them round the back of their neck and squeeze, and then push them away. Charming. Just sooooo glad I will hopefully not have to deal with him anymore.
broke both wrists at junior school when i fell off the hoops; teachers response was to give me full lecture on correct use of thumbs when on said hoops.
was a problem writing for a while and must admitt it hurt like heck , but hey we did laugh.( thirty years later !)
