Hijack of local train between Yverdon and Sainte-Croix

This is true, 90% of the Ukrainian migrants are women and children . Still, 10% out of 6m total Ukrainian refugees leaves 600k men. And yet…not too many reports of Ukrainian male migrants raping, taking hostages and harassing women.

But yeah, facts are sometimes disturbing.

I think the majority of those who came from Ukraine were genuinely fleeing to safety from war. They wanted to start a new life of peace and hopefully some prosperity so that when things go back to "normal" (whatever that looks like), they have some savings and can go back home. People fleeing from a conflict are probably less likely to hijack a train and cause trouble - because they're literally running away from trouble. Just my 2 Rp.

Are you implying that the predominantly Middle Eastern male migrants were not fleeing for fear of their lives? Because this would mean that they are merely economic migrants and then should be subject to the same rules and regulations as the rest of us immigrating to Switzerland?

Most of those Ukrainian men were older or with their young families so they had plenty to occupy them. The younger men stayed in Ukraine to fight.

As I said it was a totally different demographic.

Migrants come from all over the world, not just Ukraine or the Middle East. Even then, they come for a variety of reasons. It would not surprise me if some of those who came from Ukraine just wanted a better life, and the war presented them with an opportunity to change location more easily. There seems to be far more sympathy in Europe for Ukrainian migrants than there is for migrants from other countries.

I am simply saying that migrants that are fleeing for their lives are probably not the type to hijack trains and threaten other people's lives. But what do I know? Maybe this guy was fleeing war and a repressive regime and just had a bad day. I don't know what the screening process is for someone claiming refugee status, or how long the process takes to determine whether a person is eligible or not.

In a perfect world, economic migrants would "follow the rules" of whatever country they want to go to and only enter after meeting the requirements. In the real world, rich countries put up barriers to prevent poorer folks from getting in unless they're very lucky or very skilled. He who has the money gets to make the rules, so to speak.

Read between the lines of “different demographic” and for heaven’s sake, don’t mention the war! [ or heaven forbid religion!! ]

Indeed. Political correctness at its best. But yeah, the majority of the migrants are coming from diverse backgrounds . Lets keep on avoiding the elephant in the room discussion because…well…we’re nice.

I think that most here don ́t understand the problem.

Imagine being a refugee coming to a country that is so alien, so utterly strange and so full of infidels. You come without any marketable skills and have to be sub servant to a hostile burocracy, one where you can ́t spread a little baksheesh to grease the wheels, a country that gives women equal rights and has no work for you and no use for your goat herding techniques.

And you have to abide with laws that you don ́t understand and can ́t comprehend to boot.

Believe me when I say that the doctors and engineers and mechanics etc. are quite happy where they are and even more happy that these people are now Europes problem.

That would drive any person crazy.

What about us pensioners.

Our skills are no longer wanted. The bureaucracy is run by kids with skin problems. We didn't need to use bribes, our connections were enough; not any longer. We can't trust a woman to actually be a woman. The laws are written by idiots.

We are going crazy.

This guy was Iranian. You've got the wrong demographic for "martyrdom".

The report says the authorities are not stating what his motive was. Perhaps he just wanted his asylum claim processed more quickly. or he was due to be deported.

His plan worked really well.

Setting aside the predictable kneejerk racist reactions commonplace these days in the EF, a lot of unknowns still but Federal council have already dismissed religious or political motivations. This was not in any form political terrorism but a mentally unstable asylum seeker unable to cope with his situation

UDC Et al will run with the overreaction but there are worse places to be an asylum seeker - just screen for mental health issues better

I wonder, how is it possible:

Did he have three arms?

Hm, they are.

“According to the initial investigation, his motives were due to his conditions as an asylum-seeker, as well as to his insistent desire to have contact with a female employee of an asylum-seekers’ centre. The police had to intervene several times because of his behaviour, she said.”

Please let me know if you are taking a train in the next few days.

The system works…partially. The guy was identified as having a fragile mental state by canton Geneva authorities. Even spent some time in a psychiatric clinic. Then, in spite of the successful initial steps, slipped through gaps in the system.

Great update, cheers

Seemed clear there were mental health issues at root, I am more curious about the shooting investigation and whether lethal action could've been avoided by Police

Useful investigations try to answer the "how it happened" question, not going after the last guys who had to deal with the issue. If the asylum system had worked, the police would have never got involved in first place.

I'm not a cop defender, but in this case the police might have been trapped by the circumstances as the guy who was shot. The police got called until there was nothing else to do but shoot. Wonder how the police would have reacted to an earlier call of a missing person with mental health problems.

One of my friends - an asylum seeker at the time, now a B permit holder - was chased around a railway station by his room mate, who was wielding a knife. His room mate was committed to a secure facility.

I read the police on storming the train tried tasing the guy but to no effect.

Cheers,

Nick
