Holidays Abroad - good destinations?

Hi all,

I think what I am about to ask might be most relevent to Brits, so no offence meant to others.

Having only been here for 2 months, I'm already thinking of a holiday for later in the year, hopefully somewhere nice and hot, hopefully somewhere like Mexico or Caribbean. Is it generally cheaper to book it in the UK and cadge a cheap flight back home then go from there or are holiday prices from here comparable?

Apologies, I know it's a moot topic and having just read the tirade of banter on the latest "Can I Survive On This Much Money Blah Blah Blah" I don't want to fall foul of those pesky mickey takers

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Thanks.

Al.

I think it all depends on how you count your time, your money and your comfort or pleasure. It is probably easy to find cheaper holidays when booking abroad, but what are the inconveniences in time and comfort.

E.g. imagine you live in Zurich and you want to go to San Francisco, just for the example. You can find a direct 10 hour flight ZRH-SFO for 2000CHF.

You can find cheaper flights, via BA or wherever, with 1 or 2 stopovers, taking travel time to 18 or 21 hours.

What is your price limit for the inconvenience in terms of time and comfort of a cheaper ticket
