Holy Smoke

They elected a new pope!

That was quick, 24h or so.

He’ll be out in the balcony within the next hour or so.
Being chosen on the third vote isn’t too bad as these things go.

And who is it?

Not said/seen yet.

3rd time in a row a new Pope has been elected so quickly.

Also, there’s a nest on that roof. No way that chick can fly.

The first American pope in history, Donnie is going to be even more insufferable than he already was.

How long until Donnie starts to blackmail him?

An other old, white man, wth. Ah well, the man bit was not unexpected.

Robert Francis Prevost.

Not sure what to think…

In case the NYT article is behind a paywall, here is one from NCR with a bit more background info:

wait a second  there was no job ad on LinkedIn, I would have apply :exploding_head:

Relatively young and non Italian.

Robert Prevost, a missionary who spent his career ministering in Peru and leads the Vatican’s powerful office of bishops, was elected the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.

Prevost, a 69 YO member of the Augustinian religious order, took the name Leo XIV. He appeared on the loggia of St. Peter’s Square wearing the traditional red cape of the papacy — a cape that Pope Francis had eschewed on his election in 2013.

Prevost had been a leading candidate except for his nationality. There had long been a taboo against a U.S. pope, given the geopolitical power already wielded by the United States in the secular sphere. But Prevost, a Chicago native, was seemingly eligible also because he’s a Peruvian citizen and lived for years in Peru, first as a missionary and then as an archbishop.

American - but also a naturalised Peruvian citizen. Spent most of his life in South America and speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese.

I had my hair done this afternoon. My hairdresser is Italian and he was convinced the first black pope would be elected, he was also hoping for a young one :slightly_smiling_face:

MAGA’s not happy, not happy at all

What else can be expected from a fundamentalist Jewish person?

Religious tolerance? Obviously not.

Well, by definition all popes are “marxists” then!.. :joy:
It’s interesting how limited the vocabulary of Maga is and how everything is so black and white for them.

Religion is anyhow dead.

On the contrary. In my life-time religion has never been as dominant as in the last decade and ongoing. People fight eachother in the name of it like in ancient times. Suppress eachother, try to wipe eachother out. Control the members of their own religion with it.

It’s as if in a time where everything is possible the human mind is not able to cope with that and tries to regain control. Through religion of all things, the most unreliable, unproven, unscientific discipline available.
What’s the theory behind that? Back to the roots because the brain can’t take the present? Start all over again? The “great reset” is what, ignoring development?
Development is the only constant in our environment, easily seen in nature.
The only way imo to overcome a undesired development is to develop further and move on. Backwards is not a viable direction.

My friends know him personally :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: (they even showed me photos!)
One from Chicago, the other from Peru. They say he is a good man.

Apparently two of his grandparents were black creoles from Louisiana. No wonder the whack-jobs don’t like him.

According to his brother they don’t identify as black.
